  • Huntsville projects include Front Row’s mixed-use space near the Von Braun Center, with retail opening and later apartments & offices, and Mill Creek’s first residential buildings set to replace Johnson Towers early 2026.   • Two newborns arrived in North Alabama on New Year's Day. In Huntsville, Baby Kathryn was born at 12:03 a.m. at Crestwood Medical Center and in Florence, Baby Camryn Raylyn was born at 9:28 a.m. at North Alabama Medical Center.  WAAY 31

  • Local business owners remain cautious over a new Alabama hemp law that adds restrictions and increases paperwork for hemp consumables — they worry the changes could impact operations.  FOX 54

  • A recent report from Jan. 2 notes that new car prices in Huntsville now average around $50,000 with monthly payments near $750, prompting local buyers to consider their financing options.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Huntsville Police Department opens applications for its Spring 2026 Citizens Police Academy, offering weekly classes from March 24 to May 26 at 5365 Triana Blvd (Public Safety Training Academy) that let community members learn about law enforcement.   • A new hemp law now requires anyone entering hemp stores to be 21 and bans synthetic hemp products. Store owners must update their policies to comply with the regulation that took effect Jan. 2.  WAAY 31

HEALTH NEWS

  • Crestwood Medical Center welcomed its first baby born in 2026 (a major milestone) today, marking a hopeful beginning to the year. Hospital staff noted the newborn’s healthy arrival and congratulated the proud family.  WAFF 48
  • Local mental health expert Alexandra Brown said many Americans have given up on their New Year’s resolutions by the second Friday in January because over-ambitious goals and social media pressure lead to burnout, and she advises using SMART goals with defined timeframes to build lasting progress.  FOX 54

  • UAH Chargers secured an 88-84 overtime win over Union on Jan. 2 — the victory marked their first 11-game winning streak in program history.  WAAY 31
  • UAH women's basketball set a program record with its 11th straight win by beating Union 88 to 84 in overtime at SportsMED Arena Friday night & now leads the Gulf South Conference by two games; they will host Christian Brothers Sunday at 2 p.m. with free general admission.  WAAY 31
  • Trevor Denton recapped Alabama’s roller coaster 2025 football season on Jan. 2; the Tide finished 11-4 in Kalen DeBoer's second season.  WAAY 31
