COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in New Market are frustrated after the county resolution failed to include setback protections — safeguards needed to shield recreation areas — from Integra Water's planned wastewater plant near Winchester Road. Neighbors will work with state lawmakers to secure additional measures.  AL.com
  • Huntsville Animal Services is hosting the 'Mutts About Love' pet adoption event this week, offering pets for only $14. Visitors can meet animals marked with heart symbols on their kennels at the agency.  WAAY 31
  • The United Way of Morgan County hosts a food drive kickoff event on Friday at 7 a.m. Participants will enjoy breakfast (and a tour) to learn more about the program.  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • FOX54 features a tribute to local icon Microwave Dave today with interviews from fans, friends, and colleagues who recall his impact on the community. The segment is available on the FOX54 app for viewers to honor his memory.  FOX 54
  • Gladys Jane Motel opened on April 23, 1959 at 1302 Posey Ave to provide safe lodging for African Americans during segregation; only a pole remains and plans to install a historical marker (supported by local group Huntsville Revisited) will honor its legacy this year.  WAFF 48
  • Huntsville’s Lowry House is featured during Black History Month for its role in the fight for freedom — the site invites visitors to explore our rich heritage.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Samuel E. Hubbard Elementary in Huntsville are using 3-D printers to craft prosthetic hand parts for a local boy through their E-Nable project, with each kit costing less than $50 and taking about three hours to complete.  WAAY 31

  • HudsonAlpha scientists explained how tiny changes in DNA can lead to rare diseases during a free event at The Electric Belle at Stovehouse (part of the HudsonAlpha Event Series). The talk traced breakthroughs from historic diabetes tests to modern genomic research.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Lucia Lissandrelli opened Heart Baker Bakery in Huntsville to raise awareness for congenital heart disease and support families; during Heart Month, orders of the CHD Croissant (an almond pastry with raspberry jam) will donate half of proceeds to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.  WAAY 31
