BUSINESS NEWS

  • BAE Systems announced Foreign Military Sales contracts worth $137M and will produce components for its Common Missile Warning System (CMWS) at the Huntsville facility (local experts will support the manufacturing work).  WAAY 31
  • IKEA will close its Memphis store on May 3 as part of a strategic shift to focus on cost-effective operations & will open its first Alabama store in Huntsville this spring.  AL.com
  • Applied Aerospace & Defense will open a new radio frequency testing facility at its Huntsville site near Redstone Arsenal, offering complete RF testing services for satellite communications and defense systems (the chamber measures 28 x 32 x 20 feet).  Huntsville Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Funeral arrangements have been announced for the beloved blues musician Microwave Dave, who died Friday at age 80. The service will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity on Eustis Avenue in Huntsville on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 p.m. (a reception will follow).  WAFF 48
  • The Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation announced that a public funeral for blues legend Dave “Microwave Dave” Gallaher will be held at 2 p.m. on Feb. 28 at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, with a post-funeral reception and later details on another community celebration.  WAAY 31
  • Beloved ballets will be performed at the Huntsville Ballet Studios (on Regal Drive) with tickets costing $37 available on the ballet website. The event is set to attract local dance lovers.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Drake State Community and Technical College students received $20,000 TMCF Workforce Development Scholarships (supporting their studies and summit attendance in Birmingham in November). Recipients Corgan Smith and Australia 'Tru' Campbell say the award eased financial strain and inspired academic progress.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • State Representative Mack Butler has proposed a bill that automatically enrolls proficient math students in advanced courses as early as fifth grade, including Algebra 1 in middle school, to help them earn college credits sooner. If passed, the bill takes effect in October, and parents may opt out.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Huntsville invites residents to apply for the Civic Engagement Academy Spring 2026 cohort to gain hands-on insight into local government operations — the application deadline is Friday, Feb. 13 at 10 p.m.  City of Huntsville
  • Tomorrow, the City Council will vote on an agreement and property transfer with Eli Lilly—an investment of $6 billion—to build a 750,000 sqft campus at the northeast corner of Interstate 565 and Greenbrier Parkway. It will create 450 jobs while the city supplies a 260-acre site and workforce funds.  City of Huntsville
  • The Alabama Department of Human Resources said local EBT cardholders will soon receive new chip-enabled cards after a successful pilot program; users must activate their new card within 180 days and unlock it for out-of-state or online use (call EBT Customer Service for help).  WAAY 31

  • Oakwood Adventist Academy will be allowed to play in the Area 16 Basketball Tournament after the Montgomery County Circuit Court reversed its postseason suspension caused by a self‑reported scheduling error—AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon said the association will abide by the court’s order.  WAFF 48
  • Huntsville City FC unveiled its 2026 theme nights at Wicks Family Field, featuring revamped events like Americana Night (fireworks show on July 5) and a busy May schedule with games such as Run Rocket City Night on April 11.  FOX 54
  • Rocket City Trash Pandas Foundation has launched a scholarship program to help youth play baseball and softball available to families within 60 miles of Toyota Field. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 28 (families must explain how the scholarship would help them).  WAAY 31
