COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The WEDC Foundation is accepting nominations for its annual Women Honoring Women event to recognize outstanding local women. The foundation will share more details about the nomination process and ceremony (updates coming soon).  WAAY 31
  • Residents are invited to attend the 14th annual Community Kite Festival on Saturday, Mar. 7 at John Hunt Park (2151 Airport Road) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where families can fly kites, enjoy food trucks, and join free art projects that celebrate community unity.  City of Huntsville
  • Huntsville Botanical Garden will break ground on the INTUITIVE Plant Science Complex on Tuesday, Feb. 24 (10 a.m.) with community donors, local officials, and volunteers supporting a boost to plant science research and conservation. The new facility will expand education and innovation efforts at the garden.  WAAY 31

BUSINESS NEWS

  • First Horizon Bank announced that David King joined its Huntsville Advisory Board to aid business development and community planning; he brings nearly four decades of experience from senior roles in aerospace and defense (including at NASA and Dynetics) and will support local strategic efforts alongside board leader Ginger Harper.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Huntsville City Council approved the agreement for Eli Lilly to build a $6 billion pharmaceutical plant on a 260-acre site near Interstate 565 and Greenbrier Parkway. Construction begins this year—the plant is expected to finish in 2032—and it will add 450 lab jobs and 3,000 construction roles.  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • A petition seeks to rename Mars Music Hall for late musician Microwave Dave and has gained support from over 600 locals led by pastor Cody Gilliam. Von Braun Center officials said (the renaming process is lengthy) and no decision has been made as they explore ways to honor his legacy.  AL.com
  • The Huntsville Mardi Gras Parade kicks off Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with bands, floats, and beads filling downtown streets until about 4 p.m. Police set temporary road closures (detours included) to keep travelers safe.  AL.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • PeopleTec Inc, a Huntsville-based defense contractor, was awarded $48.1 million on Wednesday, Feb. 11 to boost Missile Defense Agency systems engineering at local facilities (with an initial $450,000 payment) over a five-year contract.  AL.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City + county teams are aiding RANA in picking up recycling left on curbs after weeks of delay. Trucks will run today for second-week customers, and normal service is expected to resume by Feb. 16, with residents asked to set carts out before 7 a.m.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Huntsville City Council named the new three-acre arboretum at John Hunt Park the Joy McKee Arboretum to honor her 22 years as Landscape Director—restoring green spaces and expanding the tree canopy. It is located at Airport Road and Alex McAllister Drive near the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex.  City of Huntsville
  • Huntsville will expand its greenways with a 2.4-mile multiuse path along Bailey Cove (and Four Mile Post) in the south and a 1.6-mile extension of the Miller Branch Greenway in the west. The projects, partly funded by TAP funds and backed by Mayor Tommy Battle, are set to improve safe, connected travel once final engineering is complete.  City of Huntsville

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Huntsville City Council approved an agreement giving the City a three-year option to buy 516 acres along U.S. 72 East (next to the Vulcan Materials quarry) for future development; the City will pay $25,000 yearly while it completes due diligence.  City of Huntsville

  • UAH softball legend Melanie Carter led the Chargers to an 8-3 record in her first 11 games as head coach. The achievement marks a strong start for the team in Huntsville.  WAAY 31
