  • Huntsville Parks & Recreation has launched its 2026 Spring Program Guide featuring over 150 free and low-cost activities at local facilities to help residents stay active, creative, and connected this spring (Director James Gossett said the guide gives everyone a chance to try something new).  City of Huntsville
  • Athens cooks hosted the annual Chili Challenge fundraiser on Feb. 17 to support Hospice & Limestone County’s programs, raising money for needed care services.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAH has secured $14.2 million in federal funding for its new Exploration Plaza planned on the former Executive Plaza area on Sparkman Drive in Cummings Research Park. The project will create a mixed-use district with a 400-bed housing facility, a 100,000 sqft research center and additional office and retail space to boost local innovation.  AL.com
  • UAH has teamed up with Microsoft as a Corporate Innovation Partner at its Invention to Innovation Center (I²C). The partnership will bring Microsoft’s cloud, AI, and hybrid-edge capabilities to modernize federal systems and support mission readiness and workforce development across north Alabama.  AL.com
  • Two students from Drake State Community and Technical College were awarded prestigious scholarships by the Thurgood Marshall Fund on Monday, Feb. 17 in Birmingham, and the fund is the nation's largest organization representing Black college students.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, Feb. 12, the Council approved a $6 billion deal with Eli Lilly that includes a property transfer and contract for a $20 million redevelopment corridor project — adding a future skybridge. The project is expected to create construction jobs and boost the local economy later this year.  Huntsville Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC and local doctors reported a spike in flu and respiratory illnesses — with RSV visits especially high among infants — in North Alabama schools on Feb. 17. Health officials are now taking extra precautions to protect students.  WAAY 31

  • Property owners planning to pass real estate to multiple children may face conflicts over usage and maintenance, according to estate planning expert McGowan. He advises using legal tools such as a revocable living trust to clearly document responsibilities and avoid disputes.  WAFF 48
