CULTURE NEWS

  • Bob Jones Theatre presents 42nd Street, a spring musical showcasing Broadway classics and flashy production numbers. Retiring artistic director Mary Davis marks her farewell with a 60-member cast and six shows scheduled in April.  The Madison Record
  • AB Stephens on Drake Ave, known for four decades, will close on May 22 after the building was sold to A1 Appliances for warehouse use. The piano department moves to Billiards and Barstools Plus Patio while longtime manager Janet Park says goodbye to an era.  AL.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Huntsville International Airport posted its busiest February ever with 122,433 passengers, a 4.4% increase over last year as nearly every airline saw gains. Airport officials note that rising leisure travel and local population growth are boosting demand and expect a busy March during spring break.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Demand for cybersecurity training is rising in Huntsville as experts say local institutions like NASA and Redstone contractors need more cyber defenders. Covenant Training Center owner Shanon Driver explained that growing threats from artificial intelligence are boosting this urgent need.  WAFF 48
  • The AUM Foundation (celebrating 10 years during Women's History Month) supports girls with mentorship, classes and career guidance in North Alabama and Selma. The organization plans a success center and affordable housing after purchasing property on Stringfield Road.  WAAY 31
  • Four Hartselle High School students developed a storm-shelter locator app now used by Morgan County EMA to help residents quickly find nearby shelters with live weather updates and safety tips in English and Spanish. The project began in an AI class and may expand statewide soon.  WAFF 48
  • Terrena Mann, a theatre teacher at Journey Middle School, has been accepted into the American Academy in Rome’s Classical Summer School with a full scholarship. The program will help her deepen her study of Greek and Roman theatre to improve her curriculum.  The Madison Record

  • A viewer sent WAFF 48 a video showing the start of the Lexington tornado on Mar. 18 at 10:49 a.m. CDT. Weather officials are monitoring the event and nearby areas for severe conditions.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A House committee approved a bill that gives overtime workers a deduction of up to $1,000 on state taxes, saving up to $50 when filing for 2026—this change led by Huntsville Rep. James Lomax is expected to benefit 800,000 workers and expire in three years unless extended.  AL.com
  • New signs along I-65 from Cullman to Limestone County will help drivers navigate better after an $800,000 replacement project announced by the Alabama Department of Transportation in early March. Planned improvements on I-65 and I-565 are set to begin this summer.  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville Police will run a DUI checkpoint on Friday at multiple intersections to deter impaired driving, urging drivers to plan for a sober ride. Drivers must show a valid license + proof of insurance and registration as authorities choose locations based on traffic and crash data.  AL.com

  • Work begins today on a $17 million student union building at Calhoun Community College on U.S. 31 — set to be a multifunctional hub for dining, study and social gatherings.
