COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new app called TREAT lets smartphone users earn free food and heartworm medicine for dogs at the Creating Hope for Paws shelter by playing a game—rolling dice to collect kibbles that turn into supplies. The contest will award 110 leashes and 20 beds to the shelter with the most new downloads by March 31.  WAFF 48
  • Veterans from across the region gathered at Worley Park in New Hope yesterday for the unveiling of its first veterans memorial.  WAAY 31

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 28 at 4:45 p.m., Officer Garrett Crumby was fatally shot while responding to an active shooting at Governors House Drive and, two years later, his family honors his sacrifice by gifting challenge coins bearing his End of Watch—reflecting his three years with Huntsville PD and eight with Tuscaloosa PD.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Huntsville City Schools is building two modern buildings near Memorial Parkway to update its facilities. The new Central Office is nearly 80% complete — with staff set to move in by the end of the school year — while the Career Tech Center is about 60% finished and will open for classes this fall for around 600 CTE students.  WHNT News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Engineers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began repairs yesterday at Wilson Lock and Dam for an $18 million project – repairs will be complete in June. Lawmakers Dale Strong and Mike Collins said damage to the gates had slowed barge traffic along the Tennessee River.  AL.com
  • On Thursday night, the Huntsville City Council approved the annexation of 112 acres, which increased the city's total to 227 square miles and added around 500 acres this year. 21 acres in Owens Cross Roads are planned for homes, and 91 acres between Bell Mina and Mooresville are expected for industrial use—city officials said the move expands growth.  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville officials said the renovated Derrick Street Homeless Camp will reopen in a few weeks after a September fire forced residents to live down the road for six months—offering a safer setting with paved areas, new fencing and regular police patrols—while strict rules, including limits on propane tanks and tent occupancy, were put in place.  WHNT News 19
  • On March 27th, the Huntsville City Council approved annexing 112 acres—over 91 in Limestone County and 21 in Madison County—expanding the city's area to over 227 square miles this year. The move adds to more than 500 acres annexed so far and paves the way for new industrial and residential developments.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Huntsville hosts the 2025 US Paralympics cycling time trial—61 athletes compete across several bike classifications—for spots on Team USA. The event runs from 9 a.m. until noon and will affect traffic as Explorer Boulevard closes between Farrow Road and the Columbia High School entrance.  WAAY 31
