COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Three Texas men were arrested in Morgan County on drug charges while a police chase in Huntsville injured two officers and one suspect. Decatur City Council will begin interviewing candidates for a new police chief today as local residents enjoyed the Taste of Soul Family Festival at MidCity, the Women’s Expo at the Von Braun Center, and a ceremony honoring local Vietnam veterans on March 29th—marking a busy period in the community.  WAFF 48

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kalm Therapeutics in Huntsville received a significant grant from Southern Research’s Therapeutics Development Fund to accelerate its research on a topical patch system for treating inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and prurigo nodularis while avoiding steroid use. The grant will support an in vivo GLP study and help the company prepare for an FDA Investigational New Drug submission later this year — strengthening local biotech collaborations.  Huntsville Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two students from Bob Jones and Grissom won the Madison County Youth Poetry Contest for Earth Day and will have their poems turned into musical competitions—Celeste Shurtz’s winning work is scheduled for performance by the Huntsville Master Chorale on April 25th and 27th.  WHNT News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hatch, a local nonprofit on Bailey Cove Road, trained 100 opportunity youths in an 8-week program that teaches work skills plus gives ServSafe certification and paid stipends. The program helps participants secure jobs with local businesses and hospitals while receiving support from city and federal grants.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a law today banning devices that convert pistols into machine guns—making it a felony with up to 10 years in jail. Local police said the move followed concerns that such devices may have been used in a deadly shooting in Birmingham that killed 4 and injured 17.  AL.com
