The Huntsville Police Department held a roundtable at the Public Safety Complex to review crime statistics showing violent crimes fell 38.9% from 1,787 in 2019 to 1,092 in 2024—police leaders credited proactive policing and community programs for the decline.

A rare piece of revived military history—an M36 Tank Destroyer—is now on display at the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum in Huntsville after a 4.5-year restoration in New Jersey.

The tank arrived Tuesday afternoon at John Hunt Park, and visitors can view it along with other historic displays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

New building permits show that construction in the Huntsville area topped $509.7 million in the first quarter of 2025 — with major projects including Huntsville Hospital’s Madison Street Tower expansion, developments at Redstone Gateway, and work at Cummings Research Park.

Huntsville Police are urging drivers to put their phones away as part of the NHTSA campaign Put the Phone Away or Pay during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.

The department said the city's Hands-Free Ordinance, which took effect Jan 1, 2024, makes violations a primary offense—ensuring that drivers can be stopped immediately if distracted.
