COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntsville residents will observe Denim Sunday as a local celebration honoring Civil Rights history. Organizers plan community activities at a designated venue, and further details will be shared soon.  FOX 54
  • Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle will lead the 17th Annual Mayor’s Bike Ride on Saturday, May 2 at 11 a.m. at Big Spring Park; residents can enjoy a four-mile route designed for wellness with check-in starting at 10:30 a.m. (helmets required).  City of Huntsville
  • Huntsville residents gathered at the Voices of Change: Rise Up Against Violence event to honor victims & discuss ways to create safer neighborhoods. Organizers said the forum provided a space for community dialogue on reducing local violence.  FOX 54
  • Bank Independent launched its Food and Family Share initiative on April 6 to help local families with food insecurity. Donations of nonperishable food and baby diapers will be collected at bank locations and partner sites through April 24.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • Ed Buckbee, founder of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center (longtime public affairs officer for Dr. Wernher von Braun), died this weekend at 89.  WAFF 48
  • Grissom Dance celebrates its 30th anniversary with Joy Explosion Jubilee this spring. The program features reimagined pieces and alumni performances with shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and a final 2 p.m. Sunday, plus a community event with bounce houses, live music, and food trucks.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alabama adjusted its early intervention model for special needs children and said services for families will not change. The update was announced Monday, Apr. 6.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State and local agencies can apply for up to $750K each through the VA’s Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (applications run April 6 to June 12) to fund case management, peer support and emergency clinical services for active duty members, veterans and their families.  AL.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Since Jan. 1, nearly 1,947 permits totaling over $532 million were issued in Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties as homebuilders, including Lennar Homes + DR Horton, advanced residential projects across the Huntsville area.  AL.com

  • Boxer Brad Ginn, managing Beacon Management Services, says boxing taught him discipline that helped his family and business.
