ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the State Department of Workforce reported that Alabama reached a record high of 2,323,588 employed in January after adding 17,703 jobs and that weekly wages hit a record $1,150.59, up by $85.22 over the year.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, Rep. Dale Strong visited the Leidos Advanced Training Center on the Drake State campus to mark the college's 65th anniversary and emphasize its role in workforce development in Huntsville. His visit highlighted strong partnerships with local businesses that aim to boost technical education.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • This fall, several high schools, including Huntsville City Schools, will offer a new Intro to AI elective designed to teach responsible use of artificial intelligence. Mary Claire Wright is leading curriculum development through a partnership with the Alabama State Department of Education, with 15 schools set to adopt the course.  WAFF 48
  • Edward Buckbee, founder of Space Camp and first chief executive of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, died Monday at age 89. The city honored his legacy in space exploration and museum education in September — a tribute to over a million inspired participants, including astronaut Christina Koch.  1819 News
  • Calhoun faculty and nursing students hosted a hospital orientation event on Apr. 7 to help 1,200 first-graders overcome their fears of hospitals. The event aimed to familiarize children with hospital settings.  WAAY 31
  • Five teachers across North Alabama are among 16 finalists for state Teacher of the Year. The finalists (including local nominees) were chosen based on excellence in teaching after a competitive nomination process.  WAFF 48

  • Madison County announced that District 4 will soon have two new storm shelters: one at Harvest Volunteer Fire Dept on Wall Triana Hwy and one at Bobo Volunteer Fire Dept on Old Railroad Bed—adding to eight steel shelters and one large safe room for severe weather protection.  WAFF 48
  • Madison County leaders signed a proclamation to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month and recognize the work at the National Children's Advocacy Center in Huntsville.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local walk to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease took place yesterday, drawing residents in support of those affected by the illness (which impacts thousands in North Alabama).  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville launched a new psychiatric urgent care center on Apr. 7 to ease long wait times — the facility provides immediate evaluation and treatment to patients in mental health crises.  WAAY 31
