COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 750 athletes will compete at the Madison County Special Olympics at Milton Frank Stadium on April 15, and event organizers need 1,200 volunteers and $10,000 in donations after a major sponsor pulled out three weeks ago. Funds will cover fencing, t-shirts, and water while each athlete must have two escorts (only 250 have signed up) to help run the events (opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. with a torch relay).  AL.com
  • The Huntsville YMCA will leave its long-time home at the Huntsville Utilities building as the owner reclaims the space for expansion—Interim CEO Jeff Collen stressed the move is not linked to the ongoing bankruptcy and members must move to a new downtown location after August 31.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • American rock band Blink-182 announced their Missionary Impossible 2025 tour with special guests Alkaline Trio — the band will perform in Huntsville on September 22 at Orion Amphitheater and tickets will go on sale on April 11.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntsville Fire & Rescue had its ISO 1 rating affirmed on April 8th, making it one of the nation's top 1% of fire departments—ongoing investments in training, equipment and a new fire station opened in 2024 have helped reduce response times and may lower homeowner insurance rates.  City of Huntsville
  • A bill passed by the Alabama Senate will let parents skip explaining their religious reasons for school vaccine exemptions as kids head back to school—Huntsville Pediatrician Dr. Dianna Linderoth said more parents are choosing not to vaccinate their children. State health officials stressed that the measles vaccine is key to stopping the spread of this very contagious disease.  WAFF 48

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local residents facing spring allergies can ease symptoms by using over-the-counter antihistamines and natural remedies like vitamin C and local honey—pharmacist Corey Bowen at Star Market also recommends keeping homes clean and windows closed to reduce pollen indoors. Consistent treatment may help minimize discomfort during this busy allergy season.  WAAY 31
  • The Huntsville Hospital Foundation was honored at Friday’s ribbon cutting by HREGI, where hospital leaders and community officials praised its work funding care and buying new equipment with over $6 million raised last year. The Foundation supports 14 hospitals and helps drive local growth + ensures donors' dollars go directly to care programs.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • St. Baldrick’s Foundation will host its annual Live Bald 2025 event from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on April 12 at The Camp on University Drive to raise funds for childhood cancer research as it celebrates 25 years of volunteer support - community members can shave their heads, join fundraising teams, or donate to support the cause.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • Madison County Special Olympics is asking for donations and volunteers to support the 55th track and field games next Tuesday for 750 athletes. A sponsor backed out at the last minute—leaving the athletes in need of about 1,200 escorts—so the event will not happen without enough help.  WAFF 48
