  • North Alabama veteran Brandon Vilt (a retired Army master sergeant) is building his Zenith 750 Super Duty in his Hazel Green hangar to inspire those overcoming obstacles. He will take his first flight on Apr. 22, 2027 (20 years after his Iraq accident).  FOX 54

  • A new report shows Alabama drivers pay an average of $30,736 over five years to own a car, including $2,116 for insurance and a 9.46% sales tax—one of the highest rates in the nation. The study from Insurance.com finds Louisiana, Nevada and Florida top the cost charts.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Huntsville residents see lower mosquito activity today due to a dry spring, though experts warn that once significant rain restores puddles in pockets like birdbaths and gutters (which can spur eggs to hatch within 72 hours), the insect population will quickly rebound.  FOX 54
  • Athens-Limestone Hospital completed its first robotic spine surgery today using the ExcelsiusGPS® system - the procedure used CT-guided imaging and robotic precision to perform minimally invasive surgery that enhances recovery and patient safety.  FOX 54

  • Alabama A&M head coach Dawn Thornton was named to the 2026 Achieving Coaching Excellence Women’s College Basketball Honor Roll on April 9, recognizing her leadership on and off the court as the Bulldogs built a strong team culture and captured a regular season championship in Huntsville.  FOX 54
  • The AAMU Bulldogs wrapped up spring camp with the Maroon & White game Saturday at Louis Crews Stadium. The team built a 20-0 lead as QB Cornelious Brown IV is set to start ahead of the season opener vs Howard in Atlanta at 6:30 p.m.  FOX 54
