COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity of the River Valley began constructing two new homes on Saturday in the Meridian Street community for deserving families — serving Madison, Limestone, and Jackson Counties. This project marks its first double wall raising since 2020.  WAFF 48
  • The Huntsville Police Department will join Partnership for a Drug-Free Community and other local partners on April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event will let residents safely drop off unneeded medications at drive-thru sites including the Public Safety Complex, Madison City Hall, and CVS Meridianville—helping prevent misuse and overdoses.  WHNT News 19

  • Huntsville Fire and Rescue responded to a structure fire yesterday at 234 Postwood Court in Huntsville — multiple units are on the scene — and officials urge residents to steer clear of the area.  WAFF 48

CRIME NEWS

  • The Madison County Sheriff's Office arrested 19-year-old James Briggs early this morning on the 500-block of Hamer Road in Owens Cross Roads after homeowners reported a vehicle burglary in progress; he was found muddy and shoeless (matching the suspect description) and charged with unlawful breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.  FOX 54
  • Authorities arrested two suspects in Shelby County on April 8th—Quintarius Shikelion White and Kierra Symone Clark—in connection with Huntsville Realtor Ronald Dumas Jr.'s disappearance, and his whereabouts have remained unknown since December 15th.  FOX 54

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Huntsville Green held its 18th annual Earth Day celebration at Hays Nature Preserve on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering interactive demonstrations—such as Rise Raptor shows, a bat exhibit and a science event—to teach local visitors about protecting the environment.  WHNT News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 7, travelers at Huntsville International Airport must obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or another accepted form of ID to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities—this requirement also applies to military bases like Redstone Arsenal, and officials warn that licensing offices may experience longer wait times. Those who have not upgraded by the deadline are advised to secure proper identification to avoid travel disruptions.  FOX 54
  • The Alabama Secretary of State's office sent letters to 432,964 voters—about 12% of registered voters—asking them to update their addresses if they have moved. Voters who do not respond by the November 2028 election will have their registration cancelled.  AL.com

  • The Rocket City Trash Pandas rallied from a five run deficit to win the second game 7-6 in a Friday doubleheader against the Knoxville Smokies at Toyota Field after a 4-0 loss in game one. The teams will meet again on Saturday night — game five is set to begin at 6:35 p.m. at Toyota Field.  WAFF 48
  • Huntsville native Jacari Lane committed to play at Texas A&M under coach Bucky McMillan — he averaged 17.3 points and 4.0 assists for North Alabama. Lane earned top ASUN honors — including Freshman of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year.  WAAY 31
