COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Monday, AMLA donated three wheelchairs and two pairs of Meta Smart Glasses to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center — funded by a grant from the Mountains, Rivers and Valleys Resource Conservation & Development Council to enhance accessibility for visitors.  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • Valley Conservatory will open its new recording studio on April 19 from noon to 6 p.m. at 5732 U.S. Highway 431 South in Brownsboro. The 1,800 sqft facility in Hampton Cove will feature a ribbon cutting, workshops, and family fun, with control room dedicated to David Gallaher (Microwave Dave).  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kara Jones, a Calhoun Community College student, created the 'Supporting Moms, Supporting Students' scholarship to help young mothers earn a full semester. She started fundraising with bake auctions and community partners at the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center, and the first award will be given in 2027 (further expansion is planned).  WAAY 31
  • A federal judge partially released Huntsville City Schools from a 60—year—old desegregation order today, easing federal oversight and marking a significant step in a historic civil rights case. The ruling may set the stage for new district policies.  FOX 54

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • India's Consul General Shri Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan said local companies can explore new ties with India's tech, aerospace, defense, and life sciences sectors during a Thursday roundtable hosted by the North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA and the University of Alabama in Huntsville I2C).  Huntsville Business Journal
  • The Better Business Bureau warns that a passport renewal scam is targeting travelers in North Alabama; a man lost $160 on a fake PDF form, and officials urge users to rely on official .gov sites + verify details before paying any fees.  WAFF 48
  • The Huntsville City Council approved a $25,000 contract with ParkZen to launch a smart-parking app that provides real-time parking data in six garages and four surface lots downtown—residents can download it to ease parking headaches later in summer.  AL.com
  • Madison City Council approved a tax break worth up to $1M for Slick City Action Park; the break will take effect once the park is operational. Local leaders say the move will boost revenue in the community.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • Healthy Huntsville is hosting Fitness in the Park with free classes like dance, Pilates, yoga and more starting Saturday, May 2 at Big Spring Park West (9-10 a.m.). The series runs on Saturdays in May and June and is open to those 16 and older (minors need an adult).  City of Huntsville

  • Trevor Denton of WAAY 31 was named the 2026 Alabama Sports Personality of the Year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association at the ABBY awards last Saturday — he appears on the station every weekend at 10 p.m.  WAAY 31
