CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Road closures are in effect in downtown for the Panoply Arts Festival at Big Spring Park. The Huntsville Police Department says adjustments started Monday, Apr. 20 and will continue until Monday, Apr. 27 (allow extra travel time). City of Huntsville
- ➤ An event celebrating Alabama's rich local traditions will be held at the A&M campus soon—details on timing and programming are forthcoming. WAAY 31
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ TVA and Plus Power signed a 20-year contract for a 200 MW/800 MWh battery storage project in Jackson County that will support regional energy reliability and local growth. Construction begins in 2028 and operations start summer 2029 & will create 50-100 construction jobs. Huntsville Business Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Construction is underway at the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering for a new institute that will provide open lab spaces for AI, engineering, and programming. Supported by a $3 million grant, the building is set to finish in December with student move-in beginning in January. WAFF 48
- ➤ GE Aerospace announced its $30 million Lifting Futures program in Auburn to fill a manufacturing skill gap and support Calhoun Community College’s Process Technology Program at the Huntsville campus. Local partners will work on training plans this spring and summer + further community details are set for the fall. Huntsville Business Journal
- ➤ The City of Huntsville has extended the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council 2026-2027 application deadline to Friday, May 1 at 10 p.m. Rising high school students (freshmen to seniors living in the city) can apply to gain hands-on experience with city operations and help shape local decision-making. - ➤ Huntsville Police remind residents to dispose of unused medications safely via drive-thru drop-offs scheduled for National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. - ➤ The Panthers tennis team claimed the 7A state title on Friday, Apr. 23 at the state tournament + their win marked a milestone for the season. WAFF 48
- ➤ Sparkman High School is hosting its first special needs track meet today and welcoming over 100 student-athletes for races and fun activities (including food and a bouncy house). Adaptive P.E. coach Josiah John prepared the event to boost inclusion and strengthen community ties. WAAY 31
