  • A memorial service was held on Apr. 26 in Huntsville to honor Ed Buckbee, founder of the Space and Rocket Center (known as Von Braun's P-R man) for his role in building the museum.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Several schools in North Alabama use the Opengate weapons detection system to screen hundreds of bags each morning and keep classrooms safe—by detecting specific metal signatures of firearms. The system, installed in response to multiple recent incidents, helps staff maintain a steady flow while enhancing layered security.  FOX 54
  • Dozens of rockets soared Friday in Hazel Green at NASA's 2026 Student Launch competition. Thirty-two teams, including UAH's Charger Rocket Works, participated and learned key lessons in teamwork and resilience from both successful flights and one mid-air failure.  FOX 54

  • Commuters entering Redstone Arsenal face delays today as staffing shortages at security gates slow traffic; officials are boosting recruitment efforts plus advising drivers to have credentials ready.  WAFF 48
  • Huntsville City Council took the first step to form a TIF district that may fund a Von Braun Civic Center expansion + help draw larger conventions. A public hearing on May 14 will let residents share their input.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • A young boy battling a likely incurable disease was made an honorary doctor last Friday at Hospice Family Care in Huntsville. The care team gave him scrubs, a white coat with his name, and a stethoscope so he could round with them.  FOX 54

SPORTS NEWS

  • James Clemens clinched the series with Bob Jones on Friday when his team won 6-0 & starting pitcher Matthew Evers delivered a four-hit shutout that set up a playoff berth ahead of upcoming games.  The Madison Record
  • Madison Academy advanced to Round 2 of the Class 5A playoffs after a 12-5 win over Fairview Friday. The eight-ranked Mustangs (23-12) recorded 13 hits with a 6-0 early lead led by Walker Sellars’ three two-run doubles and will host Boaz in the next round.  The Madison Record
  • Sparkman beat Albertville 3-1 on Friday on Sand Mountain to clinch a playoff berth; they needed a Grissom loss in Tennessee Valley (which did not occur as the Tigers won 9-8 for the championship and top seed) and will now face ninth-ranked Thompson in a best-of-three series.  The Madison Record
