COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tony McGinnis, a former basketball star, now serves as Executive Director of Huntsville Housing Authority, which oversees 1,550 housing units + 1,900 Section 8 vouchers while mentoring local youth. His work inspires community hope by using his success on the court to help build future leaders.  The Madison Record
  • Huntsville Utilities reported that more than 3,647 customers experienced power outages today. The company said it is monitoring the situation and will update residents as conditions change.  WAFF 48
  • The Land Trust of North Alabama opened a new paved trail in Huntsville on Apr. 28 that makes wooded areas easier to access — broadening outdoor options for community members.  WAAY 31

  • North Italia is opening its second location in Huntsville at Bridge Street Town Centre—taking over the spot from the closed Bravo! Italian Kitchen. The chain, owned by The Cheesecake Factory, says its modern Italian restaurant is coming soon.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local band Brother Cane has released its new album, Magnolia Medicine, featuring 'Prince Charming,' a tribute to late Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington (with guest vocals by Johnny Van Zant and harmonies by The Honkettes).  AL.com
  • Susan Black, a local nurse-turned-artist, began crafting jeweled art after attending the Dickens Festival in Muscle Shoals, using vintage jewelry to tell family stories and help herself heal. She now hosts group crafting parties at local events to help others preserve their heritage.  The Madison Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Leah Johnson will earn her Ph.D. in chemistry from UAH on May 4 and become the first graduate of the new doctoral program launched in fall 2023; the university will honor her and about 1,145 spring graduates during commencement at the Von Braun Center Propst Arena.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • FOX54 Top Teacher Katie Moore teaches Spanish at Hazel Green High School where she immerses students in Latin cultures through exhibits, competitions, and hands-on lessons. She recently chaperoned a Costa Rica trip (adding firsthand experience) and continues to inspire learning in her four-year tenure.  FOX 54

FINANCE NEWS

  • According to a 2026 Vanguard report, 6% of 401(k) participants used hardship withdrawals, a record percentage that climbed steadily since 2023. Financial expert Marshall Clay of The Welch Group warns that the withdrawals (permanent and taxable with a 10% penalty for those under 59½) should be a last resort.  WAFF 48

  • Today, General Stephen Whiting hosts a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Redstone Arsenal as U.S. Space Command opens its first dedicated operational facility. Officials say about 200 personnel will join the site by the end of the year, fueling local residential interest.  AL.com

  • Huntsville Yoga Week returns in May with free outdoor yoga classes for all levels; the event runs from May 11 to 17 at The Orion Amphitheater, U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and other venues and offers in-studio mat yoga and five-dollar aerial sessions.  WAAY 31
