CULTURE NEWS

  • A new list highlights 15 upcoming concerts across north Alabama venues. Rock star Alice Cooper performs today at Sand Mountain Amphitheater in Albertville — blues legend Robert Cray Band plays at Mars Music Hall on May 2 in Huntsville, and fans can look forward to a lively summer of music.  AL.com
  • City of Huntsville is hosting Historic Preservation Month in May to celebrate Indigenous history and sacred landscapes. Events include PorchFest on May 2, guided tours on May 7 and May 16, and a panel discussion on May 21 at City Hall (6th floor), inviting residents to learn local heritage.  City of Huntsville

  • The University of Alabama in Huntsville Board of Trustees will meet next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Altenkirch Lawn Courtyard (behind the Student Services Building) to choose a new president as Dr. Charles L. Karr prepares to retire in May, and public parking is available nearby.  AL.com
  • Alabama A&M University named William J. Young as its new Director of Bands after a national search. He brings over (25) years of music education experience and succeeds Carlton Wright, who served for 13 years.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pentagon announced a nearly $49 million grant for Auburn University for research advancing aviation and missile modernization in support of DEVCOM AvMC at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. The cost-no-fee, indefinite-delivery contract will be disbursed on a needs basis and is slated for completion in April 2031.  1819 News
  • Huntsville International Airport reopened its modernized East Runway after a 14-month rehabilitation costing $12.3 million—funded by FAA grants. The upgrades include eco-friendly LED lighting and improved shoulders, allowing the facility to handle large cargo aircraft and support future commercial space flight.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • I-65 over the Tennessee River nears completion after two years of lane shifts and repairs. ALDOT crews will restripe the 53-year-old bridges overnight over the next few weeks to restore normal travel lanes for 55,000 daily vehicles.  WAFF 48
  • Alabama’s grocery tax holiday starts today and runs through June as the state postpones the 2% tax on groceries.  WAFF 48

HEALTH NEWS

  • Huntsville Hospital launched an outpatient red blood cell exchange service for adult patients with blood disorders in its dialysis unit last month. The 90-minute treatment, mainly for those with sickle cell disease, allows patients to receive advanced care locally.  WHNT News 19
