CRIME NEWS

  • Huntsville Police will set up DUI checkpoints on May 3 and May 4 to honor Kathrynn Lively who died in a drunk driving crash on Bailey Cove Road in August 2022—her mother hopes her loss reminds everyone to avoid drinking and driving as officers plan to monitor busy intersections like Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive.  WAFF 48

  • Huntsville will host the free 805 After Five concert series starting May 15 at Campus 805’s Butler Green Park with local artist Lamont Landers headlining the kick-off and other acts scheduled every third Thursday through October from 5 to 9 p.m.—food trucks, artisan vendors, and craft brews will add to the lively experience.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McNair Junior High will welcome around 200 to 300 new 6th graders this fall as it becomes a full middle school and plans to add a new wing for more classrooms—school leaders will hire extra teachers to prepare for classes starting in August.  WAAY 31

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A radar update on May 1 showed a low Level 1/5 risk for severe weather on Thursday in Huntsville — meteorologists used new radar data to adjust their forecasts.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntsville, Madison and the Madison County Commission have agreed to spend $2.8 million on a project to ease traffic on Slaughter Road between Old Madison Pike and U.S. 72. The plan will widen a key section, add turn lanes and a traffic signal, with construction set to begin in fall 2025 and finish in fall 2026 + the improvements will be funded without borrowing from state or federal sources.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Morgan County parents have stayed at a Birmingham hospital with their daughter Ivey for seven months as she waits for a heart transplant. Ivey, who was born on October 10, 2024, has been on the heart transplant list since November 20, 2024 and is supported by a ventricular assist device (VAD) while doctors care for her.  WHNT News 19
