BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bailey Nichols and her daughter Alexis launched Wafel-Bitte in Madison during COVID-19 to offer authentic Belgian Liege waffles—experimenting with recipes and obtaining licenses to produce waffle mix and a gluten-free option. Their products are now sold online and at local stores including Alabama Goods and Rafael’s Table in Huntsville—bringing a taste of Belgium to customers across the country.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Eighteen-year-old Landon Bruski launched Bruski Branding Services while attending Madison County High School and has helped over 30 local small businesses since relocating to Huntsville in 2022—he now studies business administration at the University of Alabama and will begin an internship at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center this summer while leading community fundraisers and planning for a future in public office.  Huntsville Business Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, federal officials resume collections on defaulted student loans—marking the first time since March 2020—and over five million borrowers are affected. Borrowers were notified on May 5th and now face potential wage garnishment if payments continue to be missed.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Kay Ivey signed a record $12.1 billion education package on Monday that funds K-12 and higher education with $375 million for high-needs schools and launches the new RAISE Act to add extra funding per student starting this fall — she also approved a $3.7 billion General Fund budget that increases support for Medicaid, courts, and state troopers by 10%.  AL.com
  • Alabama’s First Class Pre-K program earned national recognition for the 19th year after it met all 10 quality benchmarks in the NIEER report, and Governor Kay Ivey with the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education noted that the program now serves more than 24,000 children in nearly 1,500 classrooms across all 67 counties — proving its strong commitment to quality early learning.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Kay Ivey visited Huntsville Monday, stopping at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center and the Von Braun Center to back moving U.S. Space Command headquarters here. She urged lawmakers to pass pending bills before the session ends and signed a bill to modernize the center's commission while telling reporters to stay tuned for more updates.  FOX 54
  • On May 5, Gov. Kay Ivey spoke at the Huntsville-Madison Chamber luncheon at the Von Braun Center—urging legislators to pass the FOCUS Act that bans cell phones during class. She added that the bill requires schools to store devices away, except for emergencies — a measure aimed at boosting public safety.  AL.com
  • Recent census data shows that the highest proportion of federal workers in the state is concentrated in five counties—Coffee County at 15%, Madison County at 12%, Dale County at 10%, Russell County at 9%, and Limestone County at 8%—indicating a wide spread beyond Huntsville’s Redstone Arsenal. The figures are based on worker counts from September 2024 and highlight regional differences in federal employment.  AL.com
