COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of North Alabama and USPS letter carriers are teaming up for the 33rd annual Stamp Out Hunger drive on Saturday to collect nonperishable food donations from Huntsville and nearby areas. Organizers warn that federal cuts will leave the food bank with nearly one million fewer pounds of food—about 833,333 meals—for local families in need.  AL.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Juan Laws, the man accused of killing a Huntsville police officer, may have his trial delayed — he faces the death penalty if convicted.  WAAY 31
  • A Madison County jury found David Tolbert guilty of capital murder on Thursday for killing his wife Savannah in 2022 — he was sentenced to life in prison without parole after police ruled her death a homicide instead of a suicide.  WAFF 48
  • Morgan County man Reaford Williams was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Thursday for causing a head-on collision that killed 19-year-old Troy Howard while driving drunk—Williams must also pay $60,000 to the state and $10,000 to the family.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds turned out at Oakwood University for a formal farewell event honoring longtime president Dr. Leslie Pollard, who will step down from his post this summer—signaling a planned change in leadership.  FOX 54
  • The Huntsville Police Department and local nonprofit Free 2 Teach will host the After School Bash at Big Spring Park on Saturday, June 7 from 4-8 p.m. to collect school supplies for public school teachers and provide community fun with bounce houses and live entertainment (featuring local food trucks and vendors) as well as police activity zones (to help 'Stuff the Squad Car').  City of Huntsville

  • At the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, the Space Force showed its work with the new film Always Above — a short film that explains its evolving role in national security. Retired Brigadier General Damon Feltman and Gen. B. Chance Saltzman spoke about how military space operations have changed as the country prepares for the future home of U.S. Space Command.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Madison County leaders plan to build a new courthouse downtown in Huntsville to replace the aging 1960s building that does not have enough courtrooms and parking. Commission Chairman Mac McCutcheon said officials are considering rebuilding on the square or constructing separate courthouse and administrative buildings — the project is estimated to cost $150 million and take five to six years with a vote on the owner's representative contract coming soon.  WAAY 31
