  • Huntsville Police & Huntsville Fire & Rescue are hosting the second annual Heroes on the Block community block party on Saturday, May 16 at the Dr. Robert Shurney Legacy Center where free food, inflatables, games, live music and vendor booths will be available.  WAAY 31
  • Residents in Huntsville can help local families by donating non-perishable items (such as canned tuna, beans, and peanut butter) to the USPS 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive from mailboxes; carriers will deliver donations to the North Alabama food bank before summer.  WAFF 48

  • Chris Allen, a Huntsville native, joined Story Financial Partners in 2025 to lead the bank’s expansion into Alabama.   • Riverton Elementary opened its outdoor classroom along Flint River yesterday to offer students a hands-on science space for exploring nature.  WAFF 48
  • Athens elementary received a $200K grant from TVA on May 8 to fund energy upgrades that will boost efficiency and improve students’ learning spaces + officials plan to update classrooms to better support students.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Military spouses urged Congress Thursday to consider waiving up to $1 million in SBA loan fees to ease funding barriers for their businesses. The proposed Military Spouse Small Business Recognition Act would lower upfront costs by at least 5 percent.  AL.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • Susan Moore claimed its first Class 1A-3A boys soccer championship by beating Altamont 4-2 last Friday at John Hunt Park. Sophomore Francisco Piceno earned MVP honors (finishing with five shots) as local fans celebrated the historic win.  AL.com
  • Indian Springs captured the Class 5A girls soccer title at John Hunt Park on Friday, May 8 with a 1-0 win over Guntersville. Gracelyn Kau scored the only goal while goalkeeper Shiloh Deusner made four saves to secure the win.  AL.com
  • Lee-Scott Academy won its second consecutive girls’ soccer state championship Friday in Huntsville, beating Whitesburg Christian 1 to 0. Freshman forward AJ Spillman — named MVP — scored the lone goal at 44:47 for a hard-fought win.  AL.com
  • St. Michael won its first boys soccer state championship on Friday, May 8 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville—defeating Springville 5-1 while Jake Lazzari scored a goal and made two assists as coach Tito Rodriguez said the team’s eight-year effort paid off.  AL.com
