COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Huntsville Police Department and local non-profit Free 2 Teach have partnered to supply school teachers with needed classroom supplies and will host the After School Bash on June 7 at Big Spring Park from 4—8 p.m. The event will feature bounce houses, live entertainment, food trucks, and a drive for donations to support teachers.  WHNT News 19

  • Hundreds lined up outside the new LEGO Store at Bridge Street in Huntsville to be among the first to explore the store, which opens today. Visitors will see the latest LEGO displays and build experiences when the doors open.  FOX 54

CRIME NEWS

  • A Morgan County circuit judge granted former Decatur officer Mac Marquette’s motion to delay his murder trial to September 15 at 9 a.m.—he is accused of shooting and killing Steve Perkins during a botched repossession in 2023.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Huntsville City Schools filed an unopposed motion for partial unitary status for extracurricular activities, facilities and staffing on May 9 (building on its current unitary status for transportation). If the court approves the motion, the district will meet four of seven criteria needed to end federal oversight (the Department of Justice has reported no opposition).  WHNT News 19
  • Dr. Jan Hume, Acting Secretary of Early Childhood Education, said Alabama’s Pre-K program, nationally recognized for 19 consecutive years, is set to add 30—40 new classrooms as part of a $12 million budget increase amid a 400% growth over the past decade. The program serves 93 Pre-K classrooms in the Huntsville-Madison area through public schools, community organizations, and private centers to offer universal access.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced on May 9th that $40 million in state road projects will improve a dangerous intersection on State Route 53 at Pinedale Road in Ardmore, where several fatalities have occurred including a recent Greyhound bus accident. The project will add new turn lanes to improve safety — preliminary engineering has begun and construction may start within two years as part of the ATRIP-II program.  AL.com

  • Huntsville native Brewer Hicklen recorded his first two major league hits on Thursday for the Detroit Tigers in a doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies, more than 1,000 days after his MLB debut with the Royals. He was sent back down to Triple-A on Friday—marking a brief return after a long wait for success.  WAAY 31
