BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dragon Alley, an Asian street food restaurant and bar, held its ribbon cutting ceremony at 1030 MidCity Dr on Monday, May 11 and became a new addition to the district's growing offerings for locals. The venue aims to boost MidCity's appeal to both residents and visitors.  City of Huntsville
  • FabArc Steel Supply expanded its Decatur operations by leasing a fabrication facility at 127 Old Alabama 24 from Turner Industries; the 60,000 sqft site on 29 acres added 35 jobs and transitioned on May 11 — positioning the company for continued growth in the Tennessee Valley.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, May 11, the Huntsville Music Office joined national partners in launching the Association of Music Offices (AMO) to share best practices and support local music. Music Officer Matt Mandrella said the group will develop frameworks to measure music's cultural impact.  City of Huntsville

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Oakwood University Gold & Blue Scholarship Gala held May 11, the District 5 Council Improvement Fund presented a $22,000 check to support student growth. The donation will help prepare students for diverse careers in the workforce.  City of Huntsville
  • District 5 Council Improvement Fund presented a $5,000 check to Columbia High School girls track team on May 11. Coach Taylor Jones and Principal Lenoise Richey accepted the donation (supporting the students' athletic development).  City of Huntsville
  • The free After School Bash returns to Big Spring Park on June 6 from 4-8 p.m. and is hosted by Huntsville PD, Huntsville Parks & Recreation, and Free 2 Teach, inviting families to bring school supplies for the Pack-the-Patrol-Car drive.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Six firms with Alabama locations received Pentagon contracts worth $984 million, including a $483 million order for Lockheed Martin in Huntsville. Work there will upgrade air and missile defense systems and support Navy and Coast Guard operations, with key phases finishing by September.  AL.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Upgrades and new business additions are planned for Plaza MidCity as part of the Old Monrovia Road project. Construction begins this month and will finish in November, adding new fitness concepts and an art academy to the district's mix of retail and entertainment.  AL.com

  • Kenneth Simon II verbally pledged to join the Crimson Tide's 2027 recruiting class on Monday, choosing Alabama over offers from Ole Miss, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee. The four-star linebacker from Brentwood Academy becomes the team's sixth commitment.  AL.com
