  • Huntsville’s fast growth, with 18 new residents per day, has many parents facing a childcare shortage due to limited affordable options and long waitlists. Childcare centers are battling staffing shortages and offering flexible schedules+ efforts to keep up with rising demand.  AL.com
  • Dr. Sasha Irby, a Lead Customer Success Manager and civic leader, serves on Habitat for Humanity’s Advisory Council and advocates for affordable housing in the city. She is partnering with the Office of Multicultural Affairs on an upcoming New Year’s initiative to bring fresh energy to local celebrations.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Redstone Federal Credit Union celebrated its 75th anniversary by paying for grocery bills at Food City on Governors Drive Tuesday morning, part of a yearlong effort — spreading kindness to local shoppers. The gesture brought relief to many in the community.  WHNT News 19

  • Christopher Lindsey, Boeing’s Technical Lead Manufacturing Engineer, earned the Rising Technical Professional Award for 2025-2026 and mentors students throughout the area. CRIME NEWS

  • Officials said a substitute teacher set off the weapon detection system at Austin High School in Decatur on Tuesday; school officials removed the teacher and have since reviewed the incident (no harm was intended).  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • The free outdoor music series at Butler Green on Campus No. 805 begins Thursday, May 21 with Motherfolk and local favorite Them Damn Dogs — upcoming concerts through October include shows by Lindsay Lou, Susannah Joffe, The Bends, Ripe, and Jackie Venson.  City of Huntsville
  • Di Jerk Pan, a Jamaican food truck at 2901 Bob Wallace Ave, serves jerk chicken, oxtail, and turkey neck crafted with traditional spices and care. The Francis family, originally from St. Thomas, will expand catering for local events with up to 500+ guests.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Leidos, which has a local office, was awarded a $2.7 billion hypersonic missile contract by the U.S. Army in a May 12 press release. The company said it will combine Navy and Army program components (including a thermal protection shield and glide body) to speed development and meet demand.  AL.com
  • Residents in Madison County District 8 will vote on May 19 for their next State Board of Education representative, choosing from three candidates including local parent Emily Jones and former council member Connie Spears, who both plan to strengthen our schools.  WHNT News 19
