  • A woman was injured in a shooting on Rime Village Drive in Huntsville on Wednesday—officers took her to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds and discovered two vehicles struck by gunfire while the Violent Crimes Unit began its investigation.  WHNT News 19

  • Celebrating 21 years, the World's Longest-Running Cigar Box Guitar Festival returns to Huntsville from May 30 to June 1 with free music, workshops, and family activities at local venues. The festival will feature a kick-off casino night at AVIQ Huntsville, swing dancing at Saturn Jive, and a finale concert at The Orion with Grammy-winner Gary Nichols and the FAME Gang — all benefiting the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation.  WAAY 31

  • Lee High School held its Freshman Awards Ceremony on Wednesday to recognize students' achievements and drew a large crowd of family and friends. Speeches from freshmen, senior students, and Demetria Green offered advice on how to succeed in high school.  WAAY 31

  • Meteorologists in Huntsville are tracking scattered storms likely to bring severe weather tonight—residents are advised to monitor local forecasts as conditions may change quickly.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntsville Fire — Rescue will begin accepting firefighter applications on May 20 after a news conference where officials explained the job’s competitive salary—starting at $53,726 and rising to $59,280 after training—benefits, elite training and career advancement; applicants must be at least 18, hold a high school diploma or GED and have no felony convictions. The department will host meet-and-greet sessions on May 29 from 6-8 p.m. at Fire Station 1 and on June 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Public Safety Training Academy to help interested candidates learn more and schedule a CPAT orientation.  City of Huntsville

HEALTH NEWS

  • Food safety inspectors have ranked local restaurants with low scores this week. Edgar’s Bakery in Providence earned a 76 after inspectors found expired chicken salad and food held at the wrong temperature, while Ol’ Heidelberg on University Drive received a 78 for issues with hot water and cleaning, and Sonic in Hazel Green was cited for a leaking septic system.  WAFF 48
