COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Habitat for Humanity is preparing to hand over its first home in Limestone County—driven by community requests for affordable housing. The new home will be completed soon to help meet local housing needs.  FOX 54

BUSINESS NEWS

  • In Huntsville, employees at a Starbucks voted to unionize earlier this month when 10 eligible voters cast ballots with eight supporting unionization—making it the third unionized store in Alabama. Six baristas led the effort for Starbucks Workers United as they now seek contract negotiations with the company amid ongoing disputes.  AL.com
  • Jefferson’s opened its New Market restaurant yesterday at 2190 Winchester Rd NE—taking over the former TailGaters sports bar. The restaurant will expand with a third location in downtown Hartselle later this year, continuing its popular menu of chicken wings and burgers.  WHNT News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The U.S. Space and Rocket Center will run a summer camp for rising 3rd to 5th graders and rising 6th to 7th graders to explore robotics, coding, circuits, and 3D printing with mini-field trips and a planetarium tour that culminates in a robotics challenge on Friday. Sessions run June 9 to 13, June 23 to 27, July 7 to 11, or July 21 to 25 with drop-off at 8:30 a.m.—pickup at noon at the Ticket Desk, and each session costs $195 for 25 students.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Redstone Arsenal opened its gates to WAAY 31 on Wednesday for a media tour that showed its long history from its World War II start to its role in Army rocket programs as part of the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday celebrations—officials added that the installation, which spans 38,000 acres and employs over 45,000 people, is working with local leaders on a new I-565 interchange and highlighted its $36 billion impact on Alabama's economy.  WAAY 31
  • Lawmakers disagree on whether Space Command headquarters should move to Huntsville or remain in Colorado — with Rep. Jeff Crank noting cost savings and better security for Golden Dome. U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers said Huntsville won the nationwide contest — leaving the final decision pending.  1819 News
  • Congressman Dale Strong discussed the 'big, beautiful bill' in an interview where he explained his support for the proposed legislation and its potential benefits for his district.  FOX 54
  • The City of Huntsville launched its first Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council on May 29 to allow high school students to serve as youth ambassadors and policy advisors. Applications remain open until June 20 at 10 p.m.—up to 25 students will be selected through a competitive process for a one-year term starting in August.  City of Huntsville

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Madison County Health Department released the latest inspection scores for food and lodging establishments inspected from May 19th to 23rd, with scores ranging from 75 to 100. Fifteen sites earned perfect scores while several establishments in Huntsville and Madison corrected critical violations on site — officials confirmed corrective actions were completed.  WAAY 31
