COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Military families in Huntsville can save money at 15 Parkway Place shops during an extended two-week Armed Forces Celebration honoring the U.S. Army's 250th birthday. The event began with a Proclamation Signing Ceremony on June 2 and will feature a luncheon on June 4, a softball game on June 5, a military appreciation game on June 6, birthday festivities on June 7, and more activities through June 14 (including concerts and fireworks).  Huntsville Business Journal
  • The Heart of the Valley YMCA is offering free admission to military families for Armed Forces Week from June 2 until June 9, giving active duty members, veterans, and their families access to fitness centers, group classes, and swimming amenities at Huntsville and Madison branches—military IDs are required.  WAAY 31
  • The Food Bank of North Alabama is asking Huntsville residents for food drives, volunteers, and donations as nearly 190,000 locals, including 44,000 children, face food insecurity. CEO Shirley Schofield said rising food costs and ended federal support programs—forcing some families to eat only one meal a day—have worsened the need for urgent help.  WAAY 31
  • On May 20, Dusty Gipson took shelter in a community storm shelter in Killingsworth Cove (134 mph winds) as an EF-2 tornado struck and destroyed his new mobile home. The shelter saved his life and he plans to rebuild a safer, permanent home on the same property.  WHNT News 19
  • Gov. Kay Ivey will issue a proclamation on June 12 to mark Women Veterans Recognition Day at the Silent No More Gala in Huntsville, where Major General (Ret.) Paulette Risher will deliver the keynote address and the Twickenham Jazz Band will perform live.  WAAY 31
  • ShowerUp announced its second mobile laundry unit at 2710 Holmes Avenue NW in Second Mile Development—targeting families and program participants from Terry Heights and Hillendale—and it will operate from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday.  WHNT News 19

  • Innovate Alabama has awarded over $3.3 million in SBIR/STTR supplemental grants to 20 small businesses statewide, including 11 startups in North Alabama (the program has now invested over $17 million across 82 companies) to help advance innovation in biotechnology, aerospace, energy and advanced manufacturing.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • The city of Huntsville may begin using AI-operated cameras on garbage trucks — weather-sealed devices that blur faces — to check for property code violations such as overgrown grass and unsafe structures, a measure intended to ease inspectors’ workload and quicken compliance notices.  AL.com
  • U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville recently announced that 21 Alabamians accepted appointments to U.S. service academies for the class of 2029—nominated for the Air Force, Military, Merchant Marine and Naval academies—including William McCarton Mitchell from Huntsville’s Alabama School of Cyber Technology & Engineering.  1819 News

  • Huntsville Hospital released a statement after receiving an F from Leapfrog, which noted problems with infections, surgery, patient safety and medical errors—arguing the report did not accurately reflect patient care.  WAAY 31
