  • The 41st annual Walley Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo (held on free fishing day) will return to Brahan Spring Park Lagoon tomorrow, giving young anglers aged 6 to 12 a chance to win up to $1,000. Huntsville Parks and Recreation (organizer) runs the event to introduce local youth to fishing.  WAFF 48

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bank47 opened its new Church Street branch on May 29 — offering concierge-style banking with one-on-one financial guidance to local government offices and businesses. The bank aims to build trusted relationships and help protect clients from online fraud.  Huntsville Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Falkville police arrested 54-year-old Scotty Barber after a K-9 officer discovered a trafficking amount of methamphetamine/fentanyl hidden in a glass of sweet tea during a traffic stop on I-65 on June 5—his $10,000 bond was set by a Morgan County Circuit Judge.  WHNT News 19
  • On Tuesday, officers responded to an assault on the 3500 block of 7th Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when a woman reported that Thomas Allen Hodge chased her and hit her with a metal pipe while she ran for safety—he was later found near a business on Governors Drive and charged with second-degree assault.  WHNT News 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Huntsville’s Annual Juneteenth Festival— a free, family-friendly event— will be held at Big Spring Park on Saturday, June 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. with performances by Element XI and the Huntsville Community Drumline. The festival is sponsored by the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs— partnering with Amazon— and will offer STEAM activities, food trucks and a live firework display.  WHNT News 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Hydrofest kicks off this weekend in Huntsville and is expected to boost the local economy. Local officials said Hydrofest 2024 generated $3 million in tourism dollars.  WAFF 48

  • Alabama Department of Human Resources says tens of millions in SNAP benefits have been suspected of fraud with funds used out-of-state and urges EBT card users to lock their cards using the new Lock/Unlock feature on ConnectEBT—especially the 'Lock Card Everywhere' option—to help stop further stolen funds.  AL.com
  • Huntsville City Council approved in January the annexation of nearly 400 acres in Limestone County to allow for over 4,000 new homes, nearly doubling the usual pace of annual development. Planning officials say the new community will include parks, markets and schools with a K–8 campus set to open in 2028 and will fully build out over the next 20 years — a sign of significant growth ahead.  Huntsville Business Journal
