CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities charged James Oliver with capital murder after 36-year-old Tiffany Bonner was found dead in a burning car on March 30 despite a protective order, and he remains held without bond pending a preliminary hearing on August 18.  WHNT News 19
  • The Alabama Securities Commission warned residents about a new cryptocurrency scam where victims invest real money into a fake website and lose millions in just a few weeks—officials reported that four people lost over a million dollars and urged everyone to be cautious when strangers ask for money online.  WAFF 48

  • Lindsay Lane Christian Academy named Andrew McCombs as new principal for both the high school and middle school; he started his role earlier in June. He comes with nine years of experience from Arab High School and two years from Whitesburg Christian Academy, and he said his goals align with the school’s motto of raising champions for Christ.  WHNT News 19
  • The University of Alabama in Huntsville launched a program that offers 25% off post-grad tuition to encourage enrollment—officials said the discount was announced on June 18th.  WAFF 48

  • Jeff Samz, president and CEO of Huntsville Hospital, was named chair-elect of the Alabama Hospital Association Board of Trustees at its annual meeting on June 18th—his record leading one of the state’s largest health systems and local roles made him a clear choice to help guide hospital policies.  WHNT News 19

  • Local realtors in Huntsville said home sales nearly flattened in May but are predicting a hot fall market—743 homes were sold with rising inventory offering more choices for buyers and slightly lower median prices. Experts warned that if inventory continues to grow, it may tip market conditions further in favor of buyers.  AL.com
