COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders presented final designs on June 24 to expand Big Spring Park East by 2.4 acres at 308 Fountain Circle—an effort to enhance downtown Huntsville’s public space. The City will bid the project in July and complete construction by the end of 2026.  Huntsville Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Ewa Maria Ciszak, a Huntsville Department of Defense employee, faces charges for allegedly keeping classified Missile Defense Agency documents at her home and in her car—an act under investigation.  FOX 54

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Huntsville approved its first sewer rate increase in 20 years during a council meeting, adding $5 to a single-family bill starting in October. Rates will rise by $1 per 1,000 gallons each month from October, then climb by 25 cents per year until 2030 and by 20 cents per year until at least 2034.  WHNT News 19
  • Local leaders broke ground on the new Ditto Landing event center at the renovated State Docks Building on June 26—Commissioner Phil Riddick said the $13,000,000 project will add over 31,000 SF of indoor space and a plaza for up to 900 guests. Construction is set to finish by Fall 2026—creating a new community venue along the Tennessee River.  WHNT News 19
  • During Thursday night's meeting, the city council approved a motion that raised Huntsville's sewer rate from ($24.15 to $29.15) and set a plan to increase bills by $1 each month from 2026 through 2034. The rate change, (the first in 20 years), will fund a $150 million upgrade of the sewer system.  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville Police Department Investigator Scott Northcutt was awarded a life-saving medal on June 26 for his brave rescue during a fiery crash at Pulaski Pike and Mallory Avenue—he pulled a severely injured officer from a burning patrol car.  City of Huntsville
  • Huntsville City Council approved a $44.6 million contract with ARCO/Murray National Holdings Inc. to expand the Huntsville Ice Sports Center at 3185 Leeman Ferry Road — adding 118,822 square feet with a new 1,254-seat arena, a second ice sheet with five curling lanes, upgraded locker rooms, and ADA-compliant elevators, with construction scheduled to finish in late 2026 or early 2027.  AL.com
