ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A trailer fire in Huntsville destroyed a home—leaving five people displaced.  FOX 54

CRIME NEWS

  • A Georgia man was arrested after a Sunday night shooting led to a rooftop standoff with Huntsville Police—officers located suspect Matthew Allan Clark from Woodstock and he was charged with first-degree assault while held on a $30,000 bond.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Madison County School System announced that officials will break ground on a new Hazel Green Middle School on July 21. The facility—located next to Hazel Green High School—will serve 7th and 8th grade students with a capacity of up to 1,200 and is expected to open for the 2027–2028 school year, with Fite Building Company awarded a $53.5 million construction contract.  WHNT News 19
  • Residents of Huntsville can now apply for the free eight‑week Civic Engagement Academy hosted by the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs—starting Tuesday, Sept. 16—and connect with City leaders, with eligibility restricted to those who are at least 19 and live in the Huntsville metro area.  City of Huntsville
  • HudsonAlpha’s Spark program (NSF-funded) let 7th and 8th graders from Whitesburg and Sparkman Middle Schools work with scientists on biotech experiments today. The after school club, created with Huntsville City Schools and Madison County School System, will expand to more campuses as students gain hands-on lab experience.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • Huntsville Police Department launched its Summer Slowdown campaign on June 9 to reduce dangerous driving by increasing patrols and public education in busy neighborhoods— the effort will run through August 12 to help cut down crashes and speeding violations.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • Registration opened on Monday for the 22nd annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run, with more than 6,500 participants expected to fill downtown Huntsville. The event honors breast cancer survivor WAFF 48 anchor Liz Hurley and features a Survivors’ Walk at 8 a.m. followed by a 5K run/walk at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 18 (proceeds support software upgrades for 3D mammography at the Huntsville Hospital Breast Center).  WAFF 48
