  • This summer volunteers from across the country will help Lincoln Village Ministry build and renovate homes for about 150 low-income families in Huntsville. The ministry’s Evolve program offers affordable housing, education, life skills assistance, and childcare (services that aim to help families stabilize their lives).  WAAY 31

  • Albert Russel Erskine was born in 1871 in Huntsville and left a railroad office job to become president of Studebaker before moving to South Bend where heavy financial stress led him to take his own life on July 1, 1933—his legacy lives on in local landmarks like Hotel Russel Erskine and a family mausoleum at Maple Hill Cemetery.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • A new FAA report said that 142 U.S. commercial space launches were carried out in 2024, with SpaceX responsible for most operations and the report predicting more-than-daily launches by 2034. CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, Priceville police stopped a Mustang missing its license plate on I-65 at the 334-mile marker and arrested two Athens men, Mickey Antonio Bott, 43, and Matthew Daniel Bailey, 41, on multiple drug charges after a narcotics investigation found a fentanyl/methamphetamine mixture + methamphetamine + opioid tablets + marijuana + drug paraphernalia, with bonds set at $135k and $125k respectively.  WHNT News 19
  • A Huntsville man, 64-year-old Michael McDougal, was arrested on July 2 for second-degree human trafficking after he manipulated a victim into sexual servitude + he is now held at Madison County Jail on a $250,000 bond+ according to police.  WHNT News 19
  • Huntsville police arrested a 65-year-old man on July 2 after he allegedly manipulated a vulnerable victim into sexual servitude by falsely promising to help improve her life — he now faces charges of human trafficking and criminal trespass with bond set at $250,500.  WAAY 31

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Huntsville Museum of Art will reopen on August 31 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Betsy and Peter Lowe Community Free Day after closing on March 2 to update its building with a new HVAC system. A community 'Keep it Cool' fundraiser raised $50,000 to cover operating costs—helping preserve the museum's permanent collection.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Huntsville ranked 15th in the nation’s most educated cities with a total score of 72.01 — the city showed strong high school and college completion rates and a top ranking among mid-sized metros for STEM jobs. WalletHub compared 150 areas using school quality, degree attainment, and equity, with Birmingham-Hoover, Montgomery, and Mobile ranking lower.  AL.com
  • The Alabama State Department of Education froze $68 million in K-12 funds as federal officials held back $6.8 billion in grant money for the 2025-26 school year—jeopardizing summer programs, hiring, and school planning. Superintendent Eric Mackey said state leaders will work quickly with Washington to release the funds so schools can maintain essential services.  1819 News
