  • Empowerment Through Change is hosting a sneaker drive through July 19 to help Huntsville’s unhoused men get the shoes they need—organizer Rosemary Jordan launched the drive in memory of her son Terrance and granddaughter D’Asia, and donations can be dropped off at G's Country Kitchen, Fade Factory, and Shirley's Treasure's.  FOX 54

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hound and Harvest, a dog-friendly restaurant in Huntsville, closed its doors after two years of service as customers gathered for a final taste and staff expressed heartfelt goodbyes — owners will hold a liquidation of all assets on Sunday, July 20, and appointments are available by calling 256-384-5135.  WHNT News 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Huntsville radio icon Hundley Batts Sr. died on July 12 at age 81, and he owned WEUP FM—the first black-owned station in Alabama—and was honored with a 2019 induction into the Alabama Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame.  WHNT News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Huntsville City Council approved a plan to add more than 1,000 acres — including land from Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete in Marshall County — into the city. The company will donate materials to fix roads that have been damaged and hurt local businesses.  FOX 54
  • Today, county crews began road improvements in the Clift Farm area at the intersection of Jack Clift Boulevard, Silo Lane and Lessie Clift Lane—installing ADA compliant curb ramps to turn the intersection into a four way stop—and drivers should expect closures that allow one lane from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the work lasts about two weeks.  WHNT News 19

  • Alabama pitcher Riley Quick was picked in the first round by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday as the 36th overall selection. He becomes the sixth first-round pick in Alabama history and the second-highest pitcher chosen from the state—joining a proud Crimson Tide legacy.  WAAY 31
