COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bridge Street Town Centre is hosting a free Back to School Bash today from 6 to 8 p.m. with a live DJ, art mural, crafts, photo ops and a performance from the Huntsville Youth Orchestra—after which a fireworks display begins at 8:15 p.m. as shoppers enjoy Tax Free Holiday savings and support a Backpack Brigade donation drive benefiting Kids to Love until July 31.  FOX 54

CRIME NEWS

  • Overnight on Thursday, deputies arrested Brandon Joseph Tate, 44, after he broke into a Madison County home on the 2000 block of Elkwood Section Road and fled on foot when confronted — agencies from Huntsville and Limestone County helped capture him and impounded his vehicle.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community Action Partnership of North Alabama runs a $30 million Head Start program that serves over 1,500 children and employs 300 teachers in 15 counties. The nonprofit has grown since 2018—raising its revenue and assets while offering health care, dental care and housing support to local families.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Health inspectors shut down several local businesses for roach infestations and a lack of hot water — inspectors also found rotting meat and molding foods at a Limestone County mini-mart — raising serious food safety concerns.  WAFF 48
  • On Sunday, July 20, Huntsville Utilities Fiber Operations will close the eastbound lane of Governors Drive from Covemont Drive to Governors Place at 1 p.m.—ending at 6 p.m.—for fiber maintenance, and on Wednesday, July 23, Electric Operations will intermittently close Little Cove Road between Cobble Farms Drive and Neal Farms from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m.—drivers should use alternate routes and drive with care around workers.  WHNT News 19
  • Alabama counties and municipalities are exempting sales tax on select back to school items for the weekend of July 18-20 — a change that may lower costs for families.  WAFF 48
  • City officials laid out plans for the North Huntsville Greenway at a City Hall open house on July 17, detailing a future route that will connect Alabama A&M with downtown venues using a Skybridge across Memorial Parkway, and consultants from an Atlanta firm mapped the corridor to add parks and boost local investment—residents say it will improve options for walking and biking.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Madison County Health Department released health inspection scores for food and lodging places inspected from July 7 to 11, with results ranging from 77 to 100—ten sites earned perfect scores—while several received scores below 85 for critical violations.  WAAY 31

SPORTS NEWS

  • Huntsville is hosting about 1,200 athletes at Milton Frank Stadium this weekend for the USA Track & Field Masters Outdoor Championships, an event expected to boost the local economy by $3 million. Organizers are providing extra medical support for high 80s temperatures—measures that cover competitors and volunteers—while athletes run relays and a 10K race.  WAAY 31
