ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Huntsville police report that 33-year-old Paris Garner allegedly hit two motorcycles with his truck on Pulaski Pike earlier this month, fatally injuring 48-year-old Nathaniel Fletcher and admitting to drinking earlier in the day—while toxicology results are pending.  WAFF 48

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Bernabe Eguia, 44, on manslaughter charges after a shooting on July 21 at the 300 block of Robin Road SW in Decatur left one person dead+ he is held at Morgan County Jail with a bond of one hundred thousand dollars while the victim's identity remains confidential until family members are notified.  WAAY 31

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congressman Dale Strong will host an Academy Day at Huntsville High School’s gym on Aug 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—north Alabama high school students interested in military academies will meet representatives from West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy as well as military recruiters to learn about a nomination process that allows each Congress member one nominee per academy per year.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials said the Planning Commission has backed the $400 million Mill Creek project and that digging for the first two residential buildings will begin in the first quarter next year on the southwest corner of the site near downtown. They added the project will use $50 million in secure federal funding to move residents from Johnson Towers into new housing—creating a mixed-income community with quality public spaces.  AL.com
  • Huntsville’s public radio station WLRH announced it will lose $155,000 each year after Congress approved a bill that cut federal support for public broadcasting. Founded in 1976 by the local library, the station is exploring its options & may face tough decisions in the coming months.  AL.com
  • Huntsville Utilities is upgrading its billing system with a new app and web portal that let customers manage their account. They said no disconnections will occur on July 21 — kiosks will be removed on July 25 and 29, auto pay details will transfer on August 2, and the new app goes live on August 11.  WHNT News 19
