BUSINESS NEWS

  • Store owners say the month-long work at the intersection of Bob Wade Lane and Countess Road has nearly paralyzed business as drivers take a nearly one-mile detour for a left turn and see a 65 to 70 percent drop in customers. Traffic crews moved the signal on July 3 to serve a new Food City—many owners say they received no notification from the city.  WHNT News 19

CRIME NEWS

  • Hartselle police arrested 36-year-old John Jacob Holland on elder abuse and domestic violence charges on July 21 after they located him during a traffic stop+ he is held on a $60,000 bond following an investigation into the severe injuries sustained by a 78-year-old victim.  FOX 54

CULTURE NEWS

  • Blue Apple Books will host author Jeff Barry for a book signing and meet-and-greet on Saturday, July 26—marking his first event in the local area—while the Madison Public Library will celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday on July 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. with a program featuring a reading, trivia, and a book sale.  The Madison Record

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Congressman Dale W. Strong will host Academy Day at Huntsville High School Gymnasium, 2304 Billie Watkins St. SW, on Saturday, August 2 from 10 am—1 pm to help area students learn about U.S. service academies and the nomination process. The event will feature academy representatives and military recruiters with more details on eligibility provided during the session.  The Madison Record
  • Amanda Browning, an 18-year-old and recent Madison Academy graduate, won second place in the Fleet Reserve Association’s Americanism Essay Contest for high school seniors—she said the award deepened her respect for veterans and noted she will study health sciences at Samford University.  The Madison Record

  • City leaders in Huntsville are discussing significant growth (which has spurred calls for infrastructure improvements) and new development plans will be introduced to meet rising demand.  WAAY 31

  • Thai Floyd was named as the new play-by-play voice for Alabama A&M football, making her the first woman to serve as a full-time announcer for an HBCU football team—an historic milestone. The Florida A&M alum will call the season opener at Arkansas on Aug. 30—her first game in her new role.  AL.com
  • Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville received a facelift with new track field areas for discus, hammer throw and javelin during a ribbon cutting ceremony last week—upgrading the facility ahead of the USATF Masters Nationals. Huntsville City Schools spent about $750-thousand on these additions as part of a $5-million renovation.  The Madison Record
