  • Snickers is an eight-month-old black and white cat at Greater Huntsville Humane Society who is FIV+ and described as floofy, shy, yet playful—she enjoys the company of friendly cats that boost her confidence. The shelter hopes someone patient will soon capture her heart.  WHNT News 19

  • A grand jury indicted Malcolm Derr—accused of capital murder for fatally shooting 18-year-old Joseph Collins on Lakeview Drive in North Huntsville.  WAFF 48

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Huntsville City Schools opened a new $40 million central office and technology center on North Memorial Parkway and Max Luther Drive that has specialized labs and classrooms for courses such as cosmetology, automotive technology, and industrial design. On Aug. 4, about 700 students will begin workforce development programs in this modern facility — a move that aims to strengthen local career opportunities.  AL.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials in Huntsville reviewed the hands-free ordinance one year after full enforcement began last July—police issued 190 citations and 112 warnings between July 1, 2024 and July 1. They said education and stricter enforcement are needed to help break old habits—saving lives and preventing crashes.  WHNT News 19
  • The Huntsville City Council held a special session to set priorities for a tight FY26 budget—members agreed to focus on easing traffic congestion and improving roads with part of a $500 million long-range plan. Other council members stressed expanding bus routes and boosting public safety—steps that will shape final budget decisions.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • Representatives from Alabama say they have worked with the White House and top officials to secure a permanent location for U.S. Space Command at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville—efforts that followed Biden’s 2023 reversal and include years of legislative support and discussions with defense leaders. They expect an official announcement soon that will confirm Huntsville as the home for Space Command.  1819 News
