CRIME NEWS

  • Daniel McCarn from Huntsville is held on a $10 million bond for shooting Scottsboro officer Lt. Derek Porch during a domestic call early Saturday—police used a drone with FLIR technology to capture him about 21 hours later—while Porch is set for another procedure on Monday.  WAAY 31

ECONOMY NEWS

  • As of Monday, July 28th, regular gas cost $2.73 per gallon in Huntsville — AAA reported that local prices in Decatur and Florence-Muscle Shoals varied slightly from the national average for mid-grade and premium fuels.  FOX 54

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students began back-to-school classes this week in local schools, and experts at the National Children’s Advocacy Center said digital bullying now reaches children anytime—parents are urged to watch for changes in behavior and speak with schools if signs are seen.  WHNT News 19
  • Auburn University placed the final beam in its new 50,000-square-foot research facility in Huntsville Monday—attendees signed the beam while Mayor Tommy Battle and Auburn officials spoke; the project, which broke ground in March 2024 and is owned by the Industrial Development Board, will soon house the Applied Research Institute.  FOX 54
  • Alisha Mayfield was named Teacher of the Year at Columbia Elementary School after 10 years of teaching third and fourth grades. She said she felt humbled by the honor and plans to share new strategies with her colleagues and students—showing her commitment to growth.  The Madison Record

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, Huntsville held a ceremony at the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldier Memorial Monument on Poplar Avenue to honor the legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers on National Buffalo Soldiers Day. The event featured remarks from Mayor Tommy Battle + reenactments and tributes that recalled the bravery and sacrifice of the first all-Black regiments in the U.S. Army.  City of Huntsville
  • Madison County commissioners used American Rescue Plan funds to improve heavy-traffic roads; nine projects—ranging from moving intersections on Patterson Land and Pulaski Pike to installing roundabouts on Wall Triana and Slaughter—began before today or will start in the coming months and must be finished by fall 2026. The upgrades aim to ease congestion by altering road layouts and adding turn lanes.  AL.com
