- ➤ Huntsville Animal Services will host multiple adoption events this August to celebrate Clear the Shelters Month—offering waived adoption fees from Aug. 11 to 16, an Adopt On the Spot event on Aug. 2 at Petsense on Winchester Road NE, and a Pop-Up Pet Adoption on Aug. 30. The shelter will also hold a Slumber Paw-ty on Aug. 15 with food trucks and social media challenges so locals can adopt, foster, or volunteer. City of Huntsville

- ➤ On Monday, Huntsville marked National Buffalo Soldiers Day with a memorial ceremony at the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldier Memorial Monument on Poplar Avenue — a tribute honoring the first all-Black regiments after the Spanish-American War. - ➤ Auburn University’s Applied Research Institute celebrated a major milestone today when its new Huntsville research facility raised the final beam—marking a key step before project completion. FOX 54
- ➤ WAFF compiled a list of school start dates for districts in the Tennessee Valley. Some schools begin on July 31 while others start as late as August 12 — giving families clear dates for planning the new school year. WAFF 48
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Huntsville Police Department launched the Zero in the Zone initiative as the new school year nears, aiming to stop speeding and distracted driving in school zones. Officers and safety patrol aides will monitor traffic near schools—focusing on student safety and enforcing traffic laws. WAAY 31
- ➤ Chief Kirk Giles, Sgt. Christopher Jackson and Councilman David Little told City Hall that Huntsville’s hands-free ordinance led to 190 citations and 112 written warnings between July 1, 2024 and July 1, and Allstate Insurance ranked the city as the 12th safest driving city in the country. Officials stressed that the law—making holding a phone a primary offense with fines that increase for repeat violations—is meant to change driver behavior to save lives while its full impact on safety is still being measured.
