ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Huntsville police and Councilwoman Dr. Jennie Robinson updated district 3 residents during a town hall meeting about the fatal bicycle crash that killed 13-year-old Kal Fox last week on Green Mountain Road near Bailey Cove Road—the driver has not been charged and a toxicology report is pending, with speeding tickets making up 69% of citations on that road. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Huntsville police said officers reached a house in the 600 block of Kennan Road around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and found an adult man and woman dead in one bedroom—evidence indicated the incident was an apparent murder-suicide. WAAY 31
- ➤ Seven puppies were left in a trash-filled box outside Huntsville Animal Services on Monday — they showed signs of neglect but began to improve in care this morning — and officials are investigating their abandonment while the puppies are made available for adoption. WAFF 48
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ AAA reported on August 11 that gas prices in Huntsville averaged $2.80 for regular fuel, $3.25 for mid-grade and $3.55 for premium while Decatur and Florence-Muscle Shoals saw regular gas at about $2.75—national averages stood higher at $3.14 for regular, $3.61 for mid-grade and $3.97 for premium. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ NASA launched Phase Two of the LunaRecycle Challenge today — the nationwide competition is managed by Marshall Space Flight Center. FOX 54
- ➤ Huntsville reached an estimated 249,102 residents as of July 1 with more than 34,000 new people added over the past five years. Construction at the Front Row development across from the Von Braun Center will add over 500 housing units—officials say the project will support the city’s continued growth—while city planners work to manage a steady increase in housing needs. - ➤ Today, Huntsville Utilities launched a new mobile app that gives customers outage alerts, paperless billing, and online outage reporting + it requires re-registration with a new account number. Customers can still pay by phone, mail, or with recurring payments + keeping the old options available. WAAY 31
- ➤ During August, several Alabama agencies and cities received Department of Defense contracts, including a $882 million cargo engineering agreement managed from Redstone Arsenal and a $74.8 million maintenance support contract for Huntsville’s Systems Products and Solutions Inc.—other awards include repair, construction, missile defense and facility upgrades scheduled through July 31. These contracts assign work to agencies from Alabama along with partners from other states and are set to be completed in the coming years. WHNT News 19
