COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kids to Love Foundation will host Over the Edge Huntsville on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20 where brave participants will rappel 160 feet from the top of the Regions Center in downtown Huntsville to raise funds for children in foster care. The event will also include food trucks, music, and activities for kids.  The Madison Record

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the UAH College of Business named its Top 20 recipients for 2025 by honoring UAH Softball’s Alexa Douthitt and UAH Women’s Lacrosse’s Sarah Cole. Douthitt from Madison has earned top athletic honors and holds a perfect 4.0 GPA—while Cole has been named All-GSC and made the President’s List every semester.  The Madison Record

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities arrested two dozen suspects after a Huntsville drug bust yesterday that recovered nearly $5 million in illegal drugs—money and stolen weapons.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In early July, the Huntsville City Council approved annexing over 1,000 acres—today it will vote on nearly 600 more acres—to boost this year's total to over 2,250 acres, and city officials said the move will guide growth while ensuring city services and infrastructure meet new needs.  AL.com
  • Organizers—the League of Women Voters of the Tennessee Valley, I Vote Madison, and GHAC of 100 Black Women—plan a forum for municipal election candidates on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at the new Madison Community Center at 1329 Browns Ferry Road; doors open at 5 p.m. and mayor candidates will speak from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by city council candidates from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. while only the first 80 attendees can enter in person and others can watch via livestream.  The Madison Record
  • On January 23, 2025, Manager of Planning and Zoning Services Thomas Nunez discussed the annexation of nearly 400 acres (Limestone County) at a City Council meeting. Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis and Mayor Tommy Battle said the city aims for balanced growth and does not expand for growth’s sake.  AL.com
  • City officials plan to turn Goldsmith-Schiffman Field near Five Points into a neighborhood park with a new playground, flag football fields, and two pickleball courts using between $8 million and $10 million from the capital improvement plan. Public input from a recent town hall is guiding the final design as work will start in 2026 and take about 15 months.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Huntsville Hospital began in 1895 as a volunteer infirmary and grew into a major health system—adding eight north Alabama hospitals in the last 12 years, now employing about 20,000 people and managing a $2.7 billion budget for 2024.  AL.com
