COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents at Monrovia Flats Apartments say mold and water damage are making their units unsafe and causing health issues, and they have asked for proper cleanup help. Councilman John Meredith said he is working with community development to hold property managers accountable while tenants have endured these problems for months—hoping for a safer living space.  WHNT News 19

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the Huntsville Police Department's DUI Task Force launches a citywide crackdown on impaired driving with checkpoints running through Sept. 2—drivers must show a license, proof of insurance, and registration as officers target high-risk areas under the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.  City of Huntsville
  • Huntsville police and area leaders announced a major drug trafficking takedown that dismantled a large-scale network using the new Agent Billy Clardy III Act—23 indictments were made and authorities seized $4.8 million in drugs, $223,385 in cash, 10 guns and 4 vehicles.  WHNT News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marshall Space Flight Center engineers in Huntsville finished the Orion adapter that links the SLS rocket's cryogenic stage to the Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II mission. It will ship next week to Kennedy Space Center+the adapter will also carry five CubeSats from four countries to study radiation, space weather and lunar technology ahead of the April 2026 launch.  WAAY 31
  • The Huntsville planning department is inviting residents to give feedback at City Hall sessions from Monday, Aug. 18 through Thursday, Aug. 21 for the University Drive Transit Oriented Development Planning Study—focusing on transit, walking, and biking improvements in Northwoods, UAH and the MidCity District. A pop-up event at Cavalry Hill Community Center and a Tuesday shuttle for Northwoods residents will also help collect community ideas.  AL.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Madison County Health Department released inspection scores from Aug. 4—8 for Huntsville food and lodging sites on a 100-point scale and found that while 15 sites earned perfect scores, several had serious issues such as roaches—seen at Phat Sammy's—and missing health agreements; follow-up corrections were made by Aug. 13. Scores ranged from 79 to 100.  WAAY 31
