COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Huntsville Police will alert drivers to temporary road closures in north Huntsville on Saturday, Aug. 23 for the annual Celebrate Education Day Parade and Festival—Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike will close from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. The parade will begin at the Academy for Science and Foreign Language Middle School and end at Mae Jemison High School, with officers managing traffic to keep everyone safe.  City of Huntsville

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Starbucks and local Interstellar Pizza are now open at the airport in a renovated 2,000-square-foot space between Gates 8 and 10—travelers can get coffee, fresh pizza, and craft beer from InnerSpace Brewing ahead of their flights. The openings are part of phase one of the airport’s upgrades while the mid-concourse restaurant will close for a four-month overhaul.  AL.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Huntsville Music Office congratulated Music Ambassador ADIA Andrews—who won New Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for 'Amen'—at the 40th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards on Aug. 16. It also noted that ambassador Dante’ Pride—who delivered a strong live performance—was nominated for Rap/Hip-Hop Song of the Year.  City of Huntsville

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Decatur-Morgan CEO program trains Morgan County juniors and seniors to start and run businesses before school begins — students meet with business owners and government leaders and earn credits from high school and UAH. Participants will launch multiple ventures and build practical skills for future success.  WAAY 31
  • Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols urged the city to extend the half-cent sales tax to fund new school buildings and renovations for a growing student body. The tax, which generates about $3.6 million a year since 2012, is set to expire in 2027 and will be reviewed by a new city council after Aug. 26—its extension is seen as critical to prevent overcrowding.  The Madison Record
  • Yesterday, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing launched its LIGHT Program to partner with Morgan County Schools and Huntsville City Schools by providing an industry instructor for classroom support at Brewer High and the new Center for Technology — the expert, MTM Group Leader Courtney Franklin, will rotate between schools for up to three school years to boost career tech education. This program addresses the shortage of seasoned instructors and builds a stronger future workforce.  WHNT News 19

  • Rep. Phil Rigsby, a former pharmacist, talked about the Alabama law that protects independent pharmacies—he explained that he authored and passed the bill and will push for more protections in the next legislative session.  FOX 54

HEALTH NEWS

  • Madison County Health Department released inspection scores for food and lodging establishments inspected Aug. 11-15 with scores from 81 to 100 and ten perfect scores—and noted violations like a broken fryer strainer and low hot water temperature that were corrected or scheduled for follow-up.  WAAY 31
