CULTURE NEWS

  • Lee Greenwood will open the new Village Green at Clift Farms in Madison—he will perform a free concert on Tuesday, September 23 at 6:30 p.m. and mark the venue as a future gathering space for picnics and markets.  AL.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calhoun Community College in Decatur opened its new 55,000 square foot Advanced Technology Center on Monday, and the modern facility offers labs and classrooms for students.  WAFF 48
  • Redstone Federal Credit Union will launch its first student-run branch in Huntsville City Schools at Mae Jemison High School, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday. The program started in 2017—teaching students work experience and financial skills—and has already donated cash back and awarded scholarships to local schools.  WHNT News 19
  • Last week, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio visited the UAH campus at the Charger Union Theater to share career and life advice with students while recounting his long spaceflight and stressing the value of a strong STEM background and teamwork—he advised students to pursue careers that bring them genuine happiness.  Huntsville Business Journal
  • The Alabama Commission on Higher Education introduced Pathways to Success to help two-year degree holders earn bachelor’s degrees with state funding—students at four-year institutions may receive up to $3,000 per academic year or $250 per credit and those at two-year institutions may get up to $1,500 or $125 per credit—as the program rolls out in southeast, east and north Alabama with JSU, Troy, Athens State and Calhoun Community College participating. This initiative is aimed at boosting local workforce skills in regions needing a stronger mix of credentials.  FOX 54

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NASA will place online-submitted names on an SD card inside Orion as it carries four astronauts around the moon for a 10-day flight launching from Florida in April 2026—Orion was built in Huntsville by NASA and Lockheed Martin to help build the foundation for future Mars missions.  1819 News
  • City officials approved a grant for safety upgrades along a 3.25 mile long section of Holmes Ave between downtown and UAH—upgrades include bike lanes, continuous sidewalks, crosswalks, improved lighting and signals. Construction will begin in summer 2026 using $21.6 million in USDOT funds and $9.16 million in matched city dollars, with a goal of zero serious injuries or fatalities by 2055.  WHNT News 19
  • Madison County officials announced that Roy Drive near Slaughter Road will be closed today for four weeks to widen Slaughter Road—traffic control signs and detours will guide drivers to alternate routes.  WHNT News 19
  • Norfolk Southern began repairs on several railroad crossings in Madison County on Monday, September 15—temporary lane closures affected key locations in Huntsville and Gurley with detour routes clearly marked. The repairs will last for several weeks and work schedules may shift due to train traffic or weather, with contractors notifying residents 24 hours before closures.  WHNT News 19

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Fall events in the Tennessee Valley offer pumpkin patches, hayrides, corn mazes, and family activities at venues like Huntsville Botanical Garden and several local farms, running from early September through early November (admission fees range from $3.25 to $30) with updates planned as new events are announced.  FOX 54

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cole Thorn, a West Morgan football player injured in Friday’s game against Priceville with a brain injury, is walking on his own and team officials said on Monday that doctors are optimistic about his recovery—Thorn even gave a thumbs-up as he left the field.  WAFF 48
  • Alabama A&M redshirt senior quarterback Cornelious Brown IV earned SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week after completing 21 passes on 33 attempts for 329 yards and two touchdowns in a 23 to 21 win over Tennessee State in a come-from-behind finish. The team will play Lane College at Louis Crews Stadium (kickoff is at 6 p.m.) as Brown continues to earn weekly conference honors.  FOX 54
