COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept. 23, Singing River Trail, the City of Elkmont and longtime advocate Richard Martin unveiled new wayfinding signs on the 10.7-mile Richard Martin Trail—used by hikers, cyclists and horseback riders and featuring Civil War landmarks. The unveiling is part of a broader plan to link communities through a 220-mile greenway network with future sign events on Swan Creek Greenway and Wheeler Wildlife Refuge.  WHNT News 19
  • Gurley held Josslyne Hulsey Day to honor an eighth grader who survived cancer + the event brought residents together to celebrate her strength and inspire hope.  FOX 54

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A well-known restaurant called The Bottle closed after 12 years of service on Washington St.—owners posted the news on Facebook and hinted at future plans for the location. This closure follows a trend of other popular local spots shutting down over the past few years.  AL.com
  • Fifth Third Bank opened its new branch yesterday at 5901-B University Drive NW in Huntsville — the first of 15 financial centers planned across Alabama in the next three years. The bank will add two more branches in the Huntsville-Madison area before the end of 2025 and aims to open 200 locations by 2028 — expanding its local presence.  WHNT News 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At an Aug 21 ceremony in Huntsville, UAH accepted a $50,000 donation from SAIC to launch the Cloud Center of Excellence that will offer cloud-computing courses and training to prepare students for cyber jobs. UAH faculty will expand its AWS curriculum into a new five-course certificate and plan to add an Undergraduate Cloud Solutions Concentration with a future Master’s program.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • WAAY 31’s Friday Future Radar Outlook video posted on Sep 26 showed Huntsville’s current temperature at 68°F and cloudy skies—a forecast that will bring a high near 82°F later, giving viewers a clear picture of the day’s weather trends.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The recently approved 2026 Huntsville budget expands parks and recreation staffing, and the city will hire more employees next fiscal year (as detailed in the budget) and (reflecting the planned staffing increase).  WAFF 48
  • The VA’s Huntsville Suicide Prevention Team hosted its first annual Memorial Ruck at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center today — veterans, service members, and community members walked with ruck sacks to honor those lost to suicide and learn about mental health resources.  WAAY 31
  • Huntsville City Council approved the annexation of 24 acres on Thursday—adding to 2,300 acres annexed this year—and zoned key parcels including a nearly 10-acre site along U.S. 431 and 14.62 acres near Greenbrier Road to guide planned residential, industrial and commercial development. The council also approved zone designations for over 1,600 acres from prior annexations as part of its master plan.  AL.com
  • The City of Huntsville approved a construction contract with Chorba Contracting Corporation for expanding the Military Museum at John Hunt Park— a $9.98 million project that includes a new pre-engineered metal building with insulated panels and renovations to the existing facility.   • Auburn men’s basketball freshman Simon Walker underwent successful foot surgery on Tuesday after injuring his right foot during practice last week—Walker, a four-star prospect from Huntsville, is expected to fully recover and will return to the court later this season.  WAAY 31
  • Auburn freshman guard Simon Walker had surgery on his right foot after injuring it last week, with his procedure done at Andrews Sports Medicine in Birmingham. The Huntsville native is expected to recover and return to the court later this season — head coach Steven Pearl said.  FOX 54
