COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A church in Ardmore held a ride-along fundraiser that raised money for a family devastated by an August fire—organizers said neighbors offered generous support.  WAFF 48
  • On Saturday, Decatur community members gathered at the second annual Justice for Steve Perkins Fall Kick-Off to honor Stephen Perkins, who was fatally shot by a police officer two years ago on Sept. 29. Perkins’ widow said the cookout helped bring neighbors together—showing support as they remembered him.  WHNT News 19
  • Tennessee Valley Outreach held a Sizzle and Smoke Barbecue Fundraiser at Ingalls Harbor — raising funds to support people in need.  WAFF 48
  • Bringing Up Down Syndrome hosted the 23rd Annual Rocket City Buddy Walk on UAH campus in Huntsville on Saturday — a community event that promoted support and awareness for Down syndrome.  WAFF 48

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After a federal court ruling struck down the 2021 State Senate map, Governor Kay Ivey said she will not call a special session to redraw the map due to uncertainty on how to meet both the Voting Rights Act and Constitution requirements. She said she remains hopeful that a fair map will be found and may reconsider her decision if a satisfactory map is identified — a special master may soon be appointed to draw one.  1819 News
  • Huntsville Police Department reminds residents that National Medication Take Back Day will be held Saturday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations including HSV Public Safety Complex, Madison City Hall, and CVS Meridianville where expired, unused or unwanted medications can be disposed of safely to protect the environment.  WHNT News 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Al Azhar Temple No. 195 hosted its first annual prostate cancer walk — survivors gathered to learn about healthy living and active lifestyles.  WAFF 48
  • Guntersville’s Dermatology of North Alabama now offers a less invasive treatment option for non melanoma skin cancer in Marshall County patients & Dr. Wharton explained that the clinic uses small doses of X rays to gently destroy cancer cells. He recommends annual check-ups to help catch skin issues early.  WHNT News 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bethune-Cookman beat Alabama A&M 41-34 on Saturday at Daytona Stadium— a late 26-yard touchdown with 1:07 left gave the Wildcats the win. Alabama A&M managed 480 yards in total but could not overcome key big plays by Bethune-Cookman.  FOX 54
  • No. 17 Alabama beat No. 5 Georgia 24—21 in Athens on September 27th as Ty Simpson threw for 276 yards, made two touchdowns and ran for a score while his team never trailed.  WAAY 31
