COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 100 seniors competed in the OlympiActs event at Magnolia Trace in Huntsville yesterday after months of training. Acts Retirement-Life Communities hosted the contest that brought together competitors from across the Mid-south + allowed them to show their skills.  WAAY 31
  • Rock the South music festival moved from Cullman to Decatur and will be held on a 150-acre site—accommodating about 30,000 people each day.  WAAY 31

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cookout, a fast food chain from North Carolina, is building two new restaurants in Alabama—one in Foley at 2550 S McKenzie Street and one in Decatur at 3354 Montgomery Highway—and they will open when construction is complete.  AL.com

  • MyStrata will host an event in Huntsville that unites TED Talk ideas—blending live concert energy with creativity—with diverse ways people experience art.  WAAY 31

  • Today, the U.S. Space and Rocket Center hosts a graduation for visually impaired kids who attended Space Camp—marking the end of their special program. The ceremony honors their hard work and signals a fresh start for these young campers.  WAAY 31

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • District Judge Anna Manasco ordered a special master to redraw Alabama's State Senate map by October 24 — the order follows a federal ruling that parts of the 2021 map violated the Voting Rights Act and came after Gov. Kay Ivey declined a special session.  1819 News
  • City officials remind homeowners to clear leaves from curbs and gutters—storm drains must remain free of debris to prevent flooding and road hazards during heavy rains. Residents must bag and dispose of leaves according to local ordinances to protect water quality.  City of Huntsville
  • NASA furloughed over 15,000 employees and kept about 3,000 working without pay after the shutdown began Wednesday to ensure that essential operations at Marshall Space Flight Center for the International Space Station and Artemis program continued. At Redstone Arsenal, gate operations continued normally while scheduled tours were cancelled — some police reports were delayed due to furloughed security personnel.  AL.com
