  • Slade Gilmer, a North Alabama 'Jeopardy!' contestant, spoke with WAAY 31 ahead of his appearance, which aired last Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.  WAAY 31
  • Rodney Smith Jr. is touring the country to mow lawns for veterans, active duty service members, gold star families, and widows. He started his 50-state tour on September 17, has mowed in 49 states, and is now in Alaska before heading to Hawaii while he works to secure a chance to mow at Arlington National Cemetery and the White House amid ongoing government discussions.  WAFF 48

  • Construction began last month on the new Chick-fil-A Trailhead at the corner of U.S. 72 East and Mooresville Road near the new Food City, and the restaurant—designed with seating for 70 inside and 16 outside—is expected to open in summer 2026.  AL.com
  • Huntsville startup founder Ruth Young-Loaeza won $750,000 at a pitch competition on Sept. 23 and her bed linen company NEET Sheets will soon pitch on live TV in Hollywood for a chance to win $1M.   • Rock The South 2026 revealed its lineup with Jason Aldean headlining the festival—tickets will be available soon and fans are urged to plan early.  FOX 54
  • Hardy will perform at Orion Amphitheatre on May 22 (as part of his 'The Country! Country! Tour!') with special guests Tucker Wetmore and McCoy Moore to support his new album 'COUNTRY! COUNTRY!'. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on October 10.  WHNT News 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Huntsville Police Department is asking residents for feedback on its online CALEA portal as it pursues reaccreditation—residents can offer commendations or concerns about public safety, community engagement, and professionalism. The department has maintained CALEA accreditation since 1996 and will use all feedback to review and improve its services.  WHNT News 19
  • Huntsville Police plan to offer free workouts to help more recruits pass the difficult physical fitness test which has disqualified many applicants—officials say the program will ease the barrier and boost success rates.  WAAY 31

HEALTH NEWS

  • Asthma and allergy symptoms rise in the Tennessee Valley during the fall as ragweed, changing weather, and viruses from kids returning to school trigger breathing issues—doctors advise families to consult a doctor if symptoms worsen.  WHNT News 19
  • The American Heart Association office in Huntsville has begun the 2025 Leaders of Impact campaign to bring together nine local leaders in fighting heart disease and stroke while raising funds and awareness. The campaign will run for seven weeks — ending November 5 — and support research and community programs with one top leader to be honored at the Heart Ball on April 11 at the Von Braun Center.  Huntsville Business Journal

  • WAAY 31 will broadcast North Alabama high school football games on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 with the Friday program starting at 10:15 p.m. and an expanded 11 p.m. edition—showing highlights, scores, and key regional matchups.  WAAY 31
  • The Alabama A&M women's basketball team earned 5 first-place votes and 224 points to finish second in the SWAC Preseason Poll, with Southern leading at 14 votes and 265 points. The Bulldogs, coming off a historic 21-win season, will open with an exhibition game against UAH before hosting Talladega on Nov. 5 and Ole Miss on Nov. 7.  WAAY 31
